Box Score ELKINS, W. Va. – A costly error late allowed Davis & Elkins College (12-13, 4-8 G-MAC) to hold onto an 80-75 victory over Trevecca Nazarene University (7-18, 4-10 G-MAC) Saturday afternoon in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game at the McDonnell Center.
ÂÂ
After being down as many as 16 points in the second half, Trevecca nearly rallied to tie the game late. With 2.9 seconds left and TNU down 78-75, the Trojans needed a three-point shot to send it to overtime. After a missed three-point shot, offensive rebound and timeout, the visitors would have an in-bound opportunity to attempt another long ball. That opportunity would never come as a timeout called from the left baseline, with TNU having no timeouts, resulted in technical foul and two free throws for D&E.
ÂÂ
Wesley Sprinkle led the Senators with 17 points while Juwan Strothers added 16 of his own. Devin Miller added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Brian Dixon rounded out the double-figuring scoring efforts with 11 hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
ÂÂ
Nick Drake led the Trojans with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Taylor Clay and Mac Walden came off the bench to tally 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Byron Sanford was extremely effective scoring 10 points, grabbing five rebounds, collecting five steals and dishing out four assists. David Woodard chipped in with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds while Jordan Hanner scored a season-high seven points.
ÂÂ
In the first half, D&E raced out to a 19-3 lead about eight minutes into the game. Sprinkle and Miller combined to score 10 of those points.
ÂÂ
The Senators got their biggest lead (28-7) after a Dixon three-pointer with 9:32 remaining in the half.
ÂÂ
Trevecca pulled the game to within 11 points on a trio of occasions with the latest coming at the 2:58 mark following a Hanner layup (35-24). But the Senators wouldn't let TNU get any closer and took a 42-28 lead into halftime.
ÂÂ
In the second half, D&E would maintain its double-digit lead until the Trojans hit a massive run. Trailing 68-54 with 5:52 left, TNU would go on a 16-4 run to bring the Senator lead to 72-70. Drake scored six, while Sanford and Clay combined for nine during the stretch.
ÂÂ
After Drake's layup brought Trojans within two, the TNU defense forced a turnover giving the visitors from the Music City a chance to tie.
ÂÂ
On the next possession, Clay missed a contested layup on the right side keeping the score at 72-70 D&E.
ÂÂ
Following two free throws from the Senators putting them back up four (74-70), Drake drove the lane and hit an acrobatic shot with a foul to pull TNU to within one (74-73).
ÂÂ
D&E added two more free throws on its next possession but again Drake scored on a layup to bring TNU to within one again (76-75).
ÂÂ
After a Strothers layup on the next possession, the Trojans would try to tie the game at 78. Woodard missed a three-point shot along the left wing, but TNU got the offensive rebound and called timeout, its last.
ÂÂ
With the Senators defending the inbound pass, TNU called another timeout, one they didn't have, and D&E made two technical foul shots for the final tally.
ÂÂ
The loss ends Trevecca's regular season with a 7-18 record. They'll wait and see who they'll play March 6 in the G-MAC Men's Basketball Tournament which will be hosted by Alderson Broaddus in Philippi, W. Va.
