Baseball | Howell, Purcell lead Trevecca past Union, 11-2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An efficient offense and outstanding pitching effort helped lead the Trevecca Nazarene (4-2) baseball team to a 11-2 victory over Union University (4-4) Friday afternoon at Jackson Field.

 

The contest was a part of the Alan Smith Classic hosted by TNU which honored the career of former athletic director Alan Smith.

 

Nick Howell led six players with multiple hits going 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs scored and another driven in.

 

Michael Purcell, in his second career start for Trevecca, tossed six innings, struck out a season-high 10 batters, allowed just two hits and one run.

 

TNU got all the run support it needed scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. With Howell and Tyler Tichenor on base, Luke Fennell and Cameron Boyett had back-to-back RBI singles giving the home team a 2-0 lead. Jeffrey Scarritt capped off the scoring as he drove in Fennell on a fielder's choice.

 

Union got on the board in the third as Wacey Russell drove in Andrew Allen with an infield single.

 

Trevecca responded in the home half of the third as Boyett connected with an RBI double and Scarritt with a one-run single. TNU led 5-1 after three.

 

TNU plated one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before scoring three in the seventh extending its lead to 11-2.

 

After an RBI single to center field from Howell, Patrick Reed scored on a wild pitch. Tichenor followed with a sacrifice fly to left field.

 

Tichenor, Fennell, Boyett and Scarritt each drove in two runs and recorded two hits for the Trojans. Ryan Arington and Ethan Hurt also collected a pair of hits for TNU. Austin Sisk closed the final three innings allowing four hits, a run and fanning three.
