Men's Basketball | Trevecca Gets Key G-MAC Win Over Central State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (7-14, 4-6 GMAC) defeated visiting Central State University (15-8, 6-3 G-MAC) 82-79 in overtime at the Trojan Fieldhouse on Thursday.

 

Trevecca is now 2-3 all-time versus Central State.

 

An 8-0 run by the visiting Marauders didn't bode well for the Trojans, but Trevecca picked away at the CSU lead. When David Woodard sank a three-pointer at the 10:18 mark, the lead had been cut to just one (17-16).

 

 The visitors reversed the momentum again and with 3:16 to go they had established a 12-point (37-25) lead. Trevecca regrouped again and closed the half with an 12-4 run that cut the CSU lead to just four (41-37) at the break.

 

Trevecca continued the run to start the second half, scoring five straight to take their first lead of the game at 42-41 with 18:48 to go. In all, it was a 17-4 run that put the Trojans up for the first time.

 

Neither team held more than a three-point lead again until Woodard scored on a drive to the basket. He was fouled and hit the free-throw to put the Trojans up by four (52-48) with 12:28 left in regulation.

 

The Marauders weren't finished though and with 7:48 to go they pulled ahead by five (60-55). Trevecca answered with a key 8-0 run that gave TNU a three-point advantage with 6:23 left.

 

With the clock running down and the Trojans trailing by four (72-68) David Woodard and Nick Drake scored on back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 72-72 to send the game to overtime.

 

In overtime, Trevecca scored the first five points and never gave up the lead. Woodard scored first, then Matt Pond hit a jumper before Drake hit a free throw to establish the lead.

 

Trevecca held off the Marauders for a key G-MAC win, 82-79.

 

Mac Walden had a career-high 13 points off the bench. The sophomore hit 3-of-5 from beyond the arch and hit both of his free throw attempts. He added three steals, two blocks, and two assists.

 

David Woodard led Trevecca with 22 points and added four rebounds while hitting 8-of-16 from the field. Matt Pond contributed 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Nick Drake had an all-around game with 14 points, eight steals, five rebounds, and six assists. He had no turnovers in 43 minutes of play while running the point most of the game after Byron Sanford left with a jammed finger.  

 

Trevecca shot 45% (29-64) while hitting 37% (7-19) from three-point range and 48% (17-35) from the foul line. Trevecca was on the short end of a 44-33 rebounding battle, but forced 29 turnovers while only giving the ball up 11 times. Trevecca had 13 steals.

 

Trevecca's bench outscored Central State 44-38 and had the edge 21-12 in points scored off of turnovers.

 

Trevecca will host Cedarville (5-16, 3-6 G-MAC) at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Trojan Fieldhouse.
