Volleyball | Trevecca Stun Cedarville in Five-Set Thriller

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (10-7, 2-0 G-MAC) remained unbeaten in conference play with a big, come-from-behind five-set win over perennial G-MAC favorite Cedarville University (11-7, 3-1 G-MAC) Saturday afternoon inside the Trojan Fieldhouse. The Trojans defeated the Yellow Jackets 25-21, 21-25, 11-25, 26-24, 15-12. "It was a team effort," said Trojan head coach Jayme Crowley. "We challenged them to play their best, to be their best, to be authentic. Good things happened from the inside out today."

The Trojans, who are the midst of a seven-game homestand, are back on the court Tuesday night against Kentucky Wesleyan College (6-6, 1-1 G-MAC). It will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night in the Trojan Fieldhouse.

Things looked bleak for the Trojans after falling behind 2-1 with a third-set loss, but credit Trevecca with the perseverance and determination necessary to win a tough fourth set and close out the win from there.

It is the first time Trevecca has defeated Cedarville since 2003, when both teams were members of the NAIA. Since Trevecca joined the G-MAC in 2012, the teams have played six times. The Yellow Jackets beat Trevecca the first five meetings. Though the matches were generally close, the Trojans won as many sets today (3) as they had in the previous five meetings.

"It was David vs. Goliath out there today," said Coach Crowley. "David stunned 'em."

Sophomore outside hitter Katelyn Atkinson (SO/Hermitage, Tenn.) led the way for the Trojans, posting 22 kills and adding 15 digs and two block assists. "We knew Cedarville was going to be ready to win, so we had to be on our 'A' game," said Atkinson. "This is definitely a mind-opener for us; we know now what we can do."

Junior Delaney Hearne (JR/San Marcos, Tex.) added 14 kills, a solo block, and two block assists, while classmate Loren Bennett (JR/Ooltewah, Tenn.) posted 44 assists, to go along with two kills and two block assists.

"We were able to capitalize today," added Coach Crowley. "We played well as a team, and I'm really pleased with their effort."
