WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team wrapped up their final pre-conference tournament on Saturday at the Battle at the Beach. The Trojans were competitive again, but the result did not fall TNU's way.
Trevecca (2-7) again had trouble on the offensive side of the net, as the Trojans hit just .157 in the match against Palm Beach Atlantic (7-4), as the Sailfish took the win 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-22).
SERIES HISTORY
The match marked the first meeting with the Sailfish in a quarter century, and PBAU's win tied the series at 1-1. The previous meeting came on August 24, 2001 - a 3-0 TNU win in West Palm Beach.
MATCH RECAP
PBAU opened the match on a 4-0 run before a kill from Katilyn Grant got the Trojans on the board. Trevecca closed the gap to two points twice, but the Sailfish had an answer each time, and a 6-3 spurt midway through the opening frame gave PBAU the lead at 14-9. Trevecca was not able to claw closer than three points in the remainder of the set, and PBAU took the final four points of the frame to grab the set one win, 25-17.
After the Sailfish opened a modest lead in the opening points of the second stanza, a kill from Grant and a block by Grant and Brynne Krangnes knotted things up at 4-4. The Trojans grabbed the lead twice in the frame, once on an ace from Zoie Elrod and once on a kill from Krangnes, but a 6-2 run from PBAU helped them reclaim the lead at 12-9, and they held it the rest of the set. A 10-3 Sailfish run helped the hosts open a 19-12 lead late in the frame, and despite two kills from Jordan Hunt and another from Grant, PBAU took six of the final eight points to grab the set 25-16 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Trevecca took the early lead in set three thanks in part to an ace from Brianna Bowman, but the Trojans were unable to generate any separation from the Sailfish early on. PBAU inched in front 10-9, when Bowman announced her presence in the match with three kills in the course of a 4-0 run that gave Trevecca their biggest lead of the day to that point at 13-10. After PBAU snapped the run with a point, Bowman and Grant combined on a block that sparked another mini-run of 3-0 that pushed the TNU lead to 16-11, and late in the set, TNU continued to lead 20-15. A Trevecca service error, though, provided the opening for PBAU to mount a 6-0 run to take the lead at 21-20 and while Bowman did manage one more kill late in the match, PBAU ended the day on what becamd a 10-2 run as they took the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.

Katilyn Grant had a dozen kills to lead the Trojans, and Bowman had the best performance of her young TNU career. The freshman from Sullivan's Island, S.C. tallied seven kills and 13 digs, and she added an ace and a block.

Trevecca will open Gulf South Conference play next weekend with a pair of road matches to start the campaign. On Friday, September 18, Trevecca will battle Auburn Montgomery (2-8, 0-0 GSC) at 6 p.m. before they head to south Georgia on Saturday to take on the Blazers of Valdosta State University (5-5, 0-0 GSC) at 1 p.m.
