Box Score VIENNA, W.Va. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (6-13, 3-5 G-MAC) broke a six game losing streak with a 69-64 win at Ohio Valley University (3-14, 2-5 G-MAC).
Trevecca is now 2-0 all-time against the Scots.
A 6-0 start by the host Scots didn't faze the Trojans as the visitors knew it would be a long night. Trevecca pulled ahead for the first time when Nick Drake buried a jumper with 10:58 on the clock, giving the Trojans an 11-10 edged. A three-pointer from Christopher Elliott gave Trevecca a 17-12 lead at 8:38.
The Scots returned the favor and took a 9-point lead (28-19) with a 16-2 run that was capped by a David Sinickas field goal at the 3:36 mark of the half. The Scots held a 32-25 lead at the half.
Trevecca came out of the half time break on fire and outscored OVU 19-6 to take a 6-point (44-38) lead with 13:27 remaining.
Byron Sanford hit a field goal with 11:04 to go that put the Trojans up by nine (53-44).
The lead didn't last though as the Scots took a 56-55 lead with 7:31 remaining, fueled by a 12-2 run.
The Scots extended their lead to six (61-55) with 5:33 to go. Trevecca didn't collapse, instead Sanford hit a jumper to put the Trojans ahead (63-62) for good with 3:16 to go. Sanford scored the next basket as well, capping a 10-1 run that sealed the Trojan win.
Trevecca finished off the 69-64 win on a pair of David Woodard free throws with :12 remaining.
Byron Sanford (14), David Woodard (11), and Aaron Turner (11) all reached double digit scoring in the second half alone.
Turner scored 11 points in each half and led the team with a season-high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. Turner hit all seven free throw attempts and added seven rebounds and three assists.
Sanford finished with 18 points and a pair of steals. He was 8-of-14 from the field. Woodard totaled 13 points, three assists, and two steals. Matt Pond led the team with nine rebounds. Christopher Elliott added nine points and eight rebounds and had two steals.
Trevecca struggled in the first half shooting just 26% (9-35), but rebounded to shoot 53% (16-30) in the second half.
For the game Trevecca shot 38% (25-65) from the field, 20% (4-20) from beyond the arch, and 75% (15-20) from the foul line.
Trevecca outrebounded Ohio Valley 43-34 while outscoring the hosts 44-32 in the second half. TNU outscored OVU 24-13 on points scored off of turnovers and 33-21 in bench scoring.
Trevecca travels to nearby Salem, W.Va. for a matchup with the Tigers of Salem International (9-9, 0-7 G-MAC) on Saturday for 3:00 p.m. tip. Trevecca is 1-0 all-time against the Tigers.
