Trevecca Takes Two from Union Bulldogs, Now 23-10

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NASHVILLE – Trevecca Nazarene (23-10, 10-0 G-MAC) swept a non-conference doubleheader over Union University (21-20) 1-0 and 3-2 (8 innings) and have won 11 of their last 12 games. The 2013 G-MAC Champions will visit Ursuline College on Saturday for their final regular season games and then return home to host the G-MAC Tournament May 2-3.

Game One

In the pitchers dual the teams only combined for eight hits. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that either team would score. Trevecca pushed across a run for the win. Union collected three hits while the Trojans scratched out five.

Lindsey Stephens (8-4) pitched her first complete game shutout of the year. Stephens pitched all seven innings and allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out three. Brooke Thomas (9-10) took the loss for the Bulldogs after giving up just five hits and one earned run. Thomas also struck out eight Trojans.

Stephens was 1-for-3 at the plate and hit her 12th double of the year. Aubrey Jordan led off the Trojan sixth with a single down the left field line. She scored after moving to third on a Haley Rodgers ground out and a passed ball. Breanna Zeis delivered an RBI-single, scoring Jordan from third to end the game.

Game Two

Game two was a pitcher dual as well. The two pitchers only allowed a combined nine hits. Union scored a single run in the first and second inning, but couldn't put another run on the board the rest of the game. The Bulldogs led until the Trojans tied the game with a run in the third and another in the fifth. The game went to extra innings, but the Trojans broke through for the winning run in the eighth.

Aubrey Jordan came through with an RBI-double in the eighth inning. Jordan Griner was placed on second and Kelsey Kemp came in to pinch run for her. Jordan, who had struck out in her three previous at bats, came through with a lined shot in the right-center alley scoring Kemp easily from second.

There were three solo home runs in the game. Union's Reagan Schrader put the Bulldogs up 2-0 with her solo shot to leadoff the second inning.

Lacey Grimes and Heather Shuler both homered for the Trojans. Grimes towering blast, her sixth of the year, cleared the scoreboard in left-center. Shuler's second home run of the year cleared the fence closer to the foul pole in left field.

Kelsey Kemp (9-2) pitched a complete game for her team-leading ninth win of the year. Kemp allowed just four hits, two runs, and six walks over eight innings of work.

Trevecca visits Ursuline College (9-19, 0-8 G-MAC) on Saturday at 12 pm in what will be the regular season finale. Trevecca defeated the Arrows 9-1 in six innings and 6-5 in eight innings on March 28 in Nashville.

Trevecca will host the G-MAC Tournament May 2-3. Trevecca and Ursuline will play in game two of the G-MAC Championship on Thursday, May 2.  Urbana and Cedarville will open the tournament in Game 1.
