No. 10 UIndy powers past Trevecca 16-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –No. 10 (CBN Top 30) University of Indianapolis (4-0) totaled 16 runs on 14 hits to defeat Trevecca Nazarene University (7-9) 16-1 Monday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game at Jackson Field.

After plating a run in each of the first two innings, the Greyhounds exploded for seven in the top of the third.

With two outs, UIndy's Nick Whitty was walked by Trojans pitcher Bryan Smith (2-1).  Caleb Hallman then hit an RBI single that was followed by a Trojan throwing error plating two runs for the Greyhounds and extending their lead to 4-0. Mitch Ransburg and Brady Thomas then connected with an RBI triple and RBI single, respectively. Trevecca had a chance to end the inning but another error from the shortstop allowed UIndy to score three more runs, all of which were unearned. The Greyhounds had seven runs on four hits in the third and were aided by three Trojan errors.

The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 12-0 in the sixth highlighted by a two-run double down the left field line by Anthony Asalon. Ryan Wides added an RBI single in the frame as well.

Hunter Newman provided the lone scoring for Trevecca in the bottom of the eighth after he homered to left field.

Wides led the Greyhounds with four RBI while going 2-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored.  Caleb Hallman went 3-for-5 with one run scored and another driven in while Thomas Brady went 2-for-2 with three runs scored.  Hugo Lalonde (2-0) picked up the win for UIndy tossing six innings, scattering four hits and striking out five.

Newman was the only player to collect multiple hits for the Trojans going 2-for-3. Smith took the loss for TNU tossing 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits, nine runs (five earned) and fanning two. Michael Donaldson struck out two batters in one inning of work.

Trevecca will hit the road March 6, its only road date of the month, at Union University (3-8). First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
