Montevallo tops Trevecca 4-3

Box Score

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Trevecca Nazarene (7-7) fell 4-3 to the University of Montevallo (9-6) Wednesday afternoon at Kermit A. Johnson Field in a non-conference baseball game.

The first three innings of the game didn't produce any scoring.  Montevallo got on the board in the bottom of the fourth.  After two outs to start the inning, the Falcons hit three straight singles capped off by Jeremy Hyde's shot to left field scoring Austin Dubberly.

Trevecca would come back the very next inning to tie the game in the fifth.  After Trae Weiss laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Blake Rogers and Corey Crunk into scoring position, Cade Seeley grounded out to the Falcons shortstop scoring Rogers.

The 1-1 tie wouldn't last long though as Montevallo's Vinny Rodriguez hit a two-out home run plating two. The Falcons would take a 3-1 lead and hold it all the way to the eighth inning.

Down by two runs, Trevecca would rally.  Tyler Tichenor singled to right center, and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Mark Rayburn would follow with a walk by Jake Christensen putting two Trojan runners on base.  After Montevallo recorded the first out of the inning on a foul ball, Jordan Foreman would single to load the bases. The Trojans would then get on the board to tie the game at 3 after a fielding error by UM's third baseman allowed two Trojans to score.

Trevecca had an opportunity to take its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth with two runners on. But a fly out to left field and a groundout to Falcons pitcher Aron McRee ended the opportunity.

In the bottom of the ninth with one out, a wild pitch moved two Falcon base runners into scoring position. The next at-bat resulted in the game-winning hit as Zack Willoubhby singled through the left side scoring Will Fulmer.

McRee picked up the win for UM tossing the last one-third inning. Alex Guilford struck out a team-high five batters. Fulmer went 3-for-4 with one run scored while Willoughby and Hyde each collected two hits.

Foreman went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Crunk collected two hits for TNU. Rogers drove in two runs as well.  Mason Dunn (0-2) took the loss for Trevecca tossing 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. Connor Haddock started the game and lasted six innings, scattered nine hits, allowed three runs and struck out a game-high six batters.

Trevecca returns to action March 2 against No. 10 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30 Poll) University of Indianapolis (2-0) for a 2 p.m. start at Jackson Field.
