Men's Basketball | Trevecca Defeats Ohio Valley, 2-0 in G-MAC Play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Trevecca Nazarene (4-6, 2-0 G-MAC) was efficient offensively throughout the game as it defeated Ohio Valley University (1-8, 0-2 G-MAC) 117-94 Saturday afternoon in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game at the Trojan Fieldhouse. It is the first meeting for these two schools in men's basketball.

 

Byron Sanford led the Trojans with 22 points and dished out a game-high five assists. Jordan Miles added 15 points while Taylor Clay and David Woodard each scored 14. Christopher Elliott came off the bench to contribute 13 points. Slay Chol chipped in with 10 points and Jordan Bedwell had his best game of the season with nine points and seven rebounds.

 

OVU's Sequan Lawrence scored a game-high 38 points on 10-of-15 shooting including 16-24 at the free throw line. He also grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double. Jerry Macon Jr. added 17 and Gerald McDonald came off the bench to chip in with 11.

 

In the first half, Aaron Turner sank a three-point shot to put TNU up 10-5 about two minutes into the game.

 

After a pair of Woodard free throws gave Trevecca an 11-point lead (28-17), the Fighting Scots would go on a 13-4 run to bring the deficit to within two points (32-30) following two free throws by Osvaldas Gaizauskas with about nine minutes left.

 

That would be the closest OVU would get as TNU took a 61-50 lead into the break.

 

Trevecca maintained a double digit lead for much of the second half, but with 11:06 remaining in the game the Fighting Scots cut the Trojan lead to eight points (80-72) on a Gerald McDonald three-pointer. Taylor Clay responded with a three-pointer and the Trojans never led the lead drop below double figures the rest of the way.

 

Trevecca's largest lead was 26 points (113-87) with 2:34 remaining before settling for a 23-point (117-94) point win.

 

Trevecca outscored Ohio Valley on points in the paint (66-38), points scored off of turnovers (37-8), and on fast break points (20-2). Trevecca had just 14 turnovers while OVU had 26.

 

Trevecca shot 57% (39-68) from the field, 38% (5-13) from three-point range, and 79% (34-43) from the foul line. Trevecca was outrebounded 39-33. OVU shot 48% (26-54) from the field, 42% (5-12) from beyond the arch, and 67% (37-55) from the line.

 

Trevecca will pause for a week of final exams before hitting the road for two more games before the Christmas break. Trevecca will play at the University of Illinois-Springfield (3-4) Prairie Stars next Saturday, December 14th. Then finish the semester with a return trip to McKendree University (4-1) Bearcats on Monday, December 16th.
