Box Score LEBANON, Ill. – The Trevecca men's basketball team (5-7) picked up a nice road win, 68-64, at McKendree University (5-2) on Monday at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center. The teams are 2-2 over the last two seasons, with each picking up road wins this season.
Trevecca opened the game strong and scored the first basket :40 seconds into the game on a Jordan Miles dunk, but the Bearcats turned the corner with a 19-0 run. Trevecca scored their second basket with when David Woodard slammed home a Christopher Elliott miss with 11:06 on the first half clock. The Trojans were held scoreless for 8:14, but then scored seven straight holding the Bearcats scoreless for 3:57.
Woodard scored a basket and was fouled wit h 6:58 remaining. The junior sank the bonus free throw cutting the Bearcat lead to just eight (23-15). A minute later Woodard sank two more free throws to cut the lead to just five (24-19) with 5:56 remaining.
Slay Chol hit a 10-foot jumper after rebounding a missed shot and then on the next trip down the floor the sophomore hit a pair of free throws to cut the MU lead to just two points with 3:00 to go in the half. Woodard followed with a free throw on the next trip to cut the lead to one (28-27). The free throw capped a 25-9 Trojan run. After a McKendree basket, Chol drilled a three-pointer to tie the game at 30-30 with 1:49 remaining.
Then Woodard sank two free throws with 6.6 seconds remaining to give the Trojans the lead (34-32) first time since they led 2-0 at the 19:20 mark. Trevecca outscored McKendree 32-13 over the final 11 minutes of first half play.
Woodard led Trevecca with 13 first-half points after hitting 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Chol added nine off the bench to fuel Trevecca's 15-4 first half bench scoring advantage. The Bearcats hit just five of their last 13 shots.
Trevecca led the second half, aside for a momentary 38-38 tie, for the first 11:55 of the second half. The Bearcats took their first lead (50-48) of the second half on a three-pointer from Clinton Happe with 8:05 remaining.
Trevecca regained the lead, but McKendree jumped ahead again (60-58) on another Happe three with 4:08 to go. That would be the last lead for the Bearcats.
A 10-4 Trevecca run closed the game and produced a 68-64 Trojan victory. Trevecca hit 6-of-8 from the line down the stretch. Byron Sanford scored five of TNU's last 10 points.
David Woodard led the Trojans with 17 points and was joined in double-figure scoring by Slay Chol (11) and Nick Drake (10). Jordan Miles led TNU with eight rebounds and four blocks.
Trevecca shot 39% (24-61) from the field, 31% (4-13) from beyond the three-point arch, and 69% (16-23) from the foul line. Trevecca ended the game with a 30-7 advantage in bench scoring and a 14-6 advantage in second chance scoring.
Trevecca will visit Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio) to start the new year. The G-MAC battle with the Marauders (7-3, 0-0 G-MAC) is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip on January 2, 2014. The Trojans will play at Cedarville (Ohio) University (1-8, 0-0 G-MAC) on January 4th at 4 p.m. before returning home. Trevecca's next home game will be the first-ever meeting with new G-MAC member Alderson Broaddus University (5-4, 0-0 G-MAC) on January 9 at 8 p.m.
