Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jordan Miles converted a three-point play with 1:35 left to break a tie and David Woodard hit several free throws after to lift Trevecca Nazarene University (2-5) to a 65-59 win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville (3-3) Tuesday night at the Trojan Fieldhouse in a non-conference game. The Chargers are receiving votes in the latest NCAA D2 poll after being ranked No. 19 in the preseason poll.
With the win, the Trojans avenged an earlier loss to the Chargers, 83-69 a week ago, and snapped a five-game losing streak in the process.
TNU came out on fire hitting 70% of its shots and taking an 11-5 lead after a Woodard layup with 15:15 left in the first half.
The Trojans would extend that lead to 10 points (19-9) after a Christopher Elliott three-pointer with 10:55 remaining.
UAH would rally though and bring the score to 21-19 after a Wayne Dedrick shot from beyond the arc. That would be the closest the Chargers got the rest of the first half as the Trojans took a 28-23 lead into the break.
Trevecca was solid offensively in the first half converting 50% (11-of-22) from the field and 3-of-7 (42.9%) from three-point range.
TNU opened the second half on a 7-0 run to go up 35-23 following a tip-in from Miles about 90 seconds in. Elliott would give the Trojans its biggest lead (48-35) of the game following a free throw with 9:06 left.
Alabama-Huntsville would rally though as it went on a 19-6 run to tie the game at 54 with 1:52 left. Ronnie Mack hit seven free throws during the stretch to lead UAH.
After Mack tied the game, the Trojans' next possession resulted in a made shot by Miles, a foul and ensuing free throw that put TNU up three (57-54). They would prevail 65-59.
Woodard led all scorers with 19 points on 4-of-7 shooting including 11-of-13 from the free throw line. He also grabbed six rebounds.
Miles added 11 points, six rebounds and three blocks while Elliott came off the bench and chipped in with nine points. Taylor Clay totaled eight points while Byron Sanford contributed seven points, collected six rebounds and notched two steals. As a team, TNU hit 21-of-26 (80.8%) from the free throw line.
The Trojans also had a 13-7 second-chance points advantage and converted 14 UAH turnovers into 18 points.
Trevecca will return to action Nov. 30 against McKendree University (3-1). The Trojans and Bearcats split two meetings a year ago.
