Men's Basketball | Carson-Newman Bests Trevecca 82-68

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene (1-3) men's basketball team lost to the Eagles of Carson-Newman University (2-0) 82-68 today. The game served as the final contest of the 2013 Carson-Newman Classic at CNU's Holt Fieldhouse.

After an 8-2 start by the Eagles, the Trojans scored five straight and trailed 8-7 with 15:08 to go in the opening half. Over the next four minutes C-N outscored TNU 13-2 and led by 12 (21-9) with 11:11 on the clock. C-N hit five three-pointers over the first nine minutes.

Treveca's Taylor Clay hit a three, cutting the lead to nine (21-12) and then Byron Sanford sank a free throw with 8:07 to go, cutting the Eagles lead to 12 (29-17). Antoine Davis gave the Eagles its biggest lead at 21 (42-21) with another three pointer with 2:35 remaining.  Carson-Newman made eight-of-its-17 (47.1%) long-range shots in the first 20 minutes while Trevecca was just 2-of-13 (15.4%). The halftime margin was 20 (46-26) in favor of the Eagles.

Ishmael Sanders and Davis each scored 14 points to lead the Eagles. Clay had six points at the break for TNU.

Sanders put the Eagles up by 24 (55-31), their largest lead of the game, on a three-pointer with 16:57 remaining. Trevecca answered with a 9-0 run that included a three-pointer from Taylor Clay and baskets from Aaron Turner, David Woodard, and Byron Sanford. The run cut the Eagle lead to 15 (55-40), but the Trojans weren't finished.

A Matt Pond three-pointer was followed moments later by a Byron Sanford steal and a tip in by David Woodard, cutting the Eagle lead to just 10 (62-52) with 6:55 left.

Carson-Newman replied with a 10-0 run that put the home team up 20 (72-52) with 4:47 to go. Trevecca countered with an 8-2 burst to make it a 14-point (74-60) game, but could get no closer over the final minutes.

David Woodard had eight points while Jordan Miles scored nine in the second half. Matt Pond scored all six of his points in the second half as he hit two of three from three-point range.

Trevecca outscored Carson-Newman 42-36 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to offset the 20-point first half deficit. The Eagles settled for an 82-68 victory.

David Woodard led a trio of Trojans who scored in double figures with 13 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists. Taylor Clay (12) and Jordan Miles (11) also hit double figures in scoring. Miles was the only starter to hit the mark, but starters Aaron Turner (9) and Byron Sanford (9) came up a point short. Sanford collected a team-high 10 rebounds and had a team-high three assists. 

The Trojans struggled shooting as they hit just 39% (27-69) from the field and 27% (6-22) from three-point range. The Trojans hit 89% from the foul line hitting eight of their nine opportunities. Trevecca outrebounded Carson-Newman 43-34.  Carson Newman limited their turnovers to eight while Trevecca had 12.

The Eagles shot 45% (27-60) from the field, 40% (12-30) from three-point range, and 69% (16-23) from the charity stripe. Antoine Davis led the game with 24 while teammate Ishmael Sanders tallied 20.

TNU had a 37-26 advantage on scoring in the paint, 35-24 in scoring off the bench, and on the better end in second chance scoring 22-13.
