Nyadaro's double-double lifts Trevecca past Martin Methodist, 65-56

NASHVILLE – JP Nyadaro scored 19 points and grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds as Trevecca Nazarene (6-11) used a 15-0 run started late in the first half to defeat Martin Methodist College (8-9) 65-56 Tuesday night in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Trojan Fieldhouse. 

 

Trailing 22-20 with 3:30 minutes left in the first half, Marquise Rudolph converted a pair of free throws to start the run for the Trojans. 

 

Following MMC's next position that resulted in a missed shot, Nick Drake would hit a three-pointer from the right side to push TNU's lead to 25-20.  Rudolph finished the final moments of the half with two more free throws.

 

There were six ties and three lead changes in the first half.

 

Leading 27-22 at the start of the second half, Trevecca scored seven more on layups from Nyadaro and Drake and a three-pointer from Peyton Henry. With a free throw added by Nyadaro with 18:30 remaining, the Trojans had their biggest lead (35-22).

 

Martin Methodist would rally to pull the game to a four-point deficit (44-40) following a Davie Champagnie layup with 12:03 left, but TNU responded.

 

Henry hit another jumper followed by another Drake three-pointer to put TNU back up nine (49-40) with 10:44 remaining.  The Redhawks wouldn't get within six points the rest of the way.

 

Rudolph finished with 14 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the free throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists. Henry tallied 12 points, all of which were scored in the second half.  Drake rounded out the double-figure scoring efforts with 11 connecting on 3-of-6 from three-point range.

 

Brandon Hunter scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-16 shooting including 7-of-11 at the free throw line.  Champagnie recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

 

The Trojans shot 40.8% (20-of-49) from the field including a 44.4% clip in the second.  Trevecca was nearly perfect at the free throw line hitting 19-of-22 (86.45).  They out-scored the Redhawks 26-18 in the paint.

 

The Redhawks finished the game hitting 19-of-58 (32.8%) from the field while converting just half (12-of-24) from the charity stripe.  MMC's bench outscored Trevecca's 25-4 and they held a 12-5 second-chance points advantage.

 

Do to conference scheduling, Trevecca will not return to action until Jan. 26 at Oakland City University (12-3). Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
