Trevecca Moves to 4-0 with Win over Freed-Hardeman

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Trevecca (4-0) remained undefeated with a 3-1 (25-19, 32-30, 23-25, 30-28) victory over NAIA No. 25 Freed-Hardeman University (1-1) at the Trojan Fieldhouse. Persephonie Devereaux led the way with 18 kills and a .424 attack percentage. The Lions, who are favored to win the TranSouth, and Trojans are former conference foes from the TranSouth.

 

Trevecca opened the match with a 25-19 win in the first set. After a run of five straight points, the Lions had cut the Trojans lead to just one at 20-19. Devereaux produced a kill off an assist from Kristen Johnson. That point led to a five-point run to finish the first set in the Trojans favor.

 

The second set was thrill filled as the Trojans rallied to tie the set late, then won in extra points 32-30. The Lions turned a 13-12 Trevecca lead and produced a 18-13 lead with a 6-0 run. The Lions looked to have sealed the win when they took a 23-19 lead. The Trojans had some fight left and outscored FHU 6-1 for a 25-24 lead. The teams battled before Trevecca scored three straight for the win.

 

The excitement continued in the third set as the Trojans rallied again, but this time the Lions held off the rally for a 25-23 lead. The Lions jumped out early and held a lead of 7-3 and 11-5. Trevecca closed the gap to one on several occasions, but could never tie the set. Trevecca cut a 24-20 FHU lead to just one, but the Lions stopped the run at 24-23 and produced the win on a kill by Fernanda Derreira.

 

The fourth and deciding set went to extra points as well, with Trevecca securing a 30-28 victory. Both teams has a major run in this set. Trevecca led 14-12 when the Lions took off on a 7-1 run to take a 19-15 lead. The Trojans returned the favor with a 5-0 run for a 20-19 lead. Neither team would lead by more than two the rest of the way. Trevecca eventually pushed through for the win with an service ace from Allison Boe.

 

Trevecca's team attack percentage rose with each set. Set one saw TNU produce just nine kills and a .138 attack percentage. In the second set the kills rose to 20 (partially due to the extra points) and the attack percentage was .164. The third set produced 15 kills and a .189 kill percentage. Trevecca saved the best for last as they had 18 kills and a .310 attack percentage in the fourth set.

 

Kristen Johnson, celebrating the first-ever G-MAC Volleyball Player of the Week award, added 14 kills with a .200 attack percentage while adding 25 assists and seven digs. Caroline Gay led the team with 29 assists and five service aces. Loren Bennett had a team-high 17 digs while Shelby Sorce had 14.
