Trevecca notches 3-1 win over Union

Box Score

JACKSON, Tenn. – Kristen Johnson led the way with 15 kills, 18 assists and 12 digs as Trevecca Nazarene University (10-6) defeated Union University (3-7) in four sets (28-26, 25-20, 7-25, 25-22) Tuesday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

It was the first win on Union's campus for TNU since Oct. 21, 2008.

"That was a monstrous win for us.  We have not won in four years against them," Trojans Head Coach Jayme Crowley said as her team snapped a two-match losing streak.

"Everything seemed to go against us in this match, but we played hard, we played together and got the win."

In the first set, the Trojans jumped out to a 10-5 lead courtesy of four attack errors from the Lady Bulldogs and two kills from Shelby Sorce. Trevecca would maintain a three-point lead for most of the match until a 6-0 run by Union gave the home team a 24-22 lead.

The Trojans would respond to tie the match at 24 with a kill by Persephonie Devereaux and eventually win 28-26.

Following a 7-7 tie in set two, Trevecca would go on a 6-1 run to take a five-point advantage and never look back winning 25-20.  Devereaux would tally five kills in the set while Johnson added four.

Needing a win to keep the match going, the Lady Bulldogs stormed out to a 13-2 lead over the Trojans.  Lydia Wright tallied four kills during the run. Union limited Trevecca to a .074 hitting percentage in the third set. The set would end with an 8-0 Union run.

In the fourth and final set, with the score tied at 8, the Trojans would go on a 5-0 run to seemingly have control of the match. The Lady Bulldogs would fight back however, tying the fourth set at 17. Savannah Hughes had two kills during the run while Trevecca aided the home team with two errors.

Tied at 17, the Trojans would wrap up the match with three kills by Jenna Robertson and two more from Johnson.

Devereaux finished the match with 12 kills while Caroline Gay had a team-high 20 assists. Loren Bennett collected a match-high 19 digs while Sorce recorded 12.

Hughes tallied a match-high 19 kills while Kristin Cook added 12 of her own. Wright recorded a double-double with a match-high 27 assists and 12 digs. Elise Seufert paced the Lady Bulldogs defense with 18 digs.

Trevecca returns to action Sept. 27 as they travel to Bethel University (5-8) for a 7 p.m. match.
