TROUTVILLE, Va. - The Trevecca softball team
(37-15-1) delivered a knockout punch to second-seed Cedarville University (35-23)
and seventh-seed Emmanuel (27-31) on Friday. Trevecca scored seven runs in the
first two innings against Cedarville and went on to a 7-0 victory that included
lots of offensive and pitching highlights. The second game was just as
spectacular as the Trojans advanced to Championship Saturday with a 9-0
five-inning victory over Emmanuel. Trevecca will face sixth-seed Campbellsville

Game One
Trevecca scored four runs in the bottom of the
first for a 4-0 lead. Lauren Baker walked and an out Breanna Zeis and Heather
Shuler hit back-to-back singles scoring Baker. Lindsey Stephens stepped into
the box and delivered a three-run home run. Trevecca didn't let off the gas and
added three runs in the second inning for a 7-0 lead. With one out in the
second Baker and Aubrey Jordan reached on back-to-back errors. Both runners
advanced to second and third with stolen bases. Zeis followed with a single
that scored Baker and moved Jordan to third. Zeis stole second just before
Shuler scored Jordan on a fielder's choice (6-3). Zeis scored when Stephens
reached on an error.
Lauren Baker (14-6) picked up the win with three innings of work. Baker walked two,
but didn't allowed hit while striking out four. Natalie Papini came on in relief
in the top of the fourth and picked up her eighth save of the year. The save
adds to Papini's TNU season record for saves. Papini pitched a perfect four
innings while striking out six. Courtney Spain (10-6) took the loss for
Cedarville giving up seven runs - five earned, over six innings. She walked
three and struck out seven.
Lindsey Stephens was 1-for-2 with a three-run
home run and a total of four RBI. Stephens also reached on an error that drove
in a run. The home run is her third of the year and the freshman now has 30 RBI
in 2012. Heather Shuler was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI - the sophomore
has produced 28 RBI this season. Baker was 0-1, but scored two runs - one in
the first and second innings - and reached on a walk and an error. Zeis was
2-for-3 with two runs scored, a stolen base, and an RBI.
Notes: Trevecca and Cedarville are each members
of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, a new NCAA Division ll conference.
Next year the teams will begin playing on a regular basis.
Game Two
Trevecca scored two in the first for a 2-0 lead.
Aubrey Jordan singled with one out and then advanced to second on a stolen
base. Breanna Zeis and Heather Shuler walked before Lindsey Stephens drove in
Jordan and Zeis with a single. In the second Trevecca added five more runs for
a 7-0 lead. Caitlyn Bailey reached on an error to lead off the inning. An out
later Lauren Baker walked. Jordan loaded the bases with a bunt. Zeis followed
with a double that cleared the bases. Zeis advanced to third on a Shuler ground
out. With two out Zeis scored when Stephens reached on a missed catch. Ansley
Brantley struck out looking, but reached with the third strike was dropped.
Lacey Grimes walked to load the bases again. Another error scored Stephens from
third. Trevecca added their final two runs in the third for a 9-0 lead. With two
out and Baker on first with a walk, Zeis singled to center moving Baker to
third. Shuler followed with her triple and drove in both base runners.
Riley Mashburn (14-7) picked up the win by
pitching three innings of two-hit softball. The senior sat down three Lion
batters and walked just one. Natalie Papini finished the game with two innings
of one-hit softball and struck out two Emmanuel batters. Holley Springer (2-2) took
the loss. Springer allowed four hits, seven runs - six earned, four walks in
two innings of work.
As a team Trevecca scored nine runs on seven
hits and there were no errors. Emmanuel had three hits and four errors.
Notes: Trevecca has allowed just two runs in
the NCCAA National Championships. Those two runs were scored by Judson. In her
last 16 innings pitched, Riley Mashburn has not allowed a run, earned or
unearned. Mashburn has allowed just seven hits and has struck out 22 opposing
batters. Mashburn's career record is now 65-26 and has 484 career strike outs. Lauren
Baker was 0-3 today, but walked three times, scored two runs. Baker has only
struck out 11 times in 128 official at bats this season. In the circle, Baker
surpassed the 500 career strikeout mark yesterday. Baker has a career pitching
record of 66-20. Combined the Baker/Mashburn duo has combined for a 131-46
record and more than a 1000 career strikeouts.
Trevecca will face sixth-seed Campbellsville
(40-23) at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday (Watch Live: HERE)
. Campbellsville defeated Trevecca 3-2 on
February 25 at the Alabama Artic Blast (Decatur, Ala.).The winner will advance
to the championship game at 11 a.m. versus top seeded California Baptist (48-6).
Cal Baptist is undefeated in the double-elimination tournament and are winners
of their last 16 games. A win by Trevecca or Campbellsville in the 11 a.m. game
would extend the tournament to a final if necessary game.
