Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trojan softball team (20-10, 9-3 TranSouth) swept a pair of games from NAIA #RV Davenport (16-10) Saturday afternoon at the Trojan Softball Complex, taking the opener 4-1, and the nightcap 5-4.
Game OneLauren Baker and
Riley Mashburn combined on a two-hitter,
Ansley Brantley homered, and
Lacey Grimes drove in a pair of runs in the Trojans' opening game victory.
Baker pitched four hitless innings to start the game, striking out five and walking three. But the game was still scoreless at that point, as the Trojan offense had managed only three hits off Davenport starter Karlee Despres.
Mashburn (5-5) allowed just two hits and an unearned run over the final three innings to pick up the win.
Brantley led off the fifth inning with her third home run of the season to provide the game's first run. After the Panthers tied it with a run in the top of the sixth, Trevecca put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by
Heather Shuler and a two-run single by Grimes.
Game TwoThe nightcap was different from the opener right from the start, with the teams combining for seven runs in the first inning.
After Davenport touched up Trevecca starter
Natalie Papini for three runs in the top of the inning, Trevecca answered with four runs in the home half of the inning, scoring on a pair of Panther errors and a two-run double by
Ansley Brantley.
Papini (7-2) settled down after the first, only giving up two hits the rest of the way, but one of them was a solo homer by Davenport catcher Debra Burton that tied the game in the fourth inning.
Davenport starter Sam Cole (10-7) was able to keep the Trevecca offense in check after the big first inning, but the Trojans finally broke through with the game winner in the bottom of the seventh.
Caitlyn Bailey led off with a single down the right field line, and
Tori Hulan came in to pinch run for her. After
Lindsey Stephens laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hulan to second,
Kari Mason singled down the right field line to bring home the winning run, but Hulan sliding just under the tag of Burton at the plate.
Brantley and
Nicole Davis had two hits apiece to lead the Trojan offense, which totaled nine hits for the game.
