Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca women's basketball team (7-13, 3-4 TranSouth) dropped its fourth straight game Saturday afternoon, falling 83-77 in overtime to Martin Methodist College (14-7, 4-4) at the Trojan Fieldhouse.
"We had our chances to get a win today," said assistant Courtney Van Atta. "We got off to a rough start, but battled back and got a great effort, but just couldn't make enough plays to get the win."
The RedHawks jumped on top 9-0 in the first five minutes, before Kayla Biles finally got the Trojans on the board with a pair of free throws with 14:31 left in the half. After five straight points by Trevecca, Martin Methodist pushed the lead to double digits, taking a 21-11 lead on a bucket by Keri O'Neal with 10:12 left until halftime. But the Trojans answered with eight straight points to start a 14-4 run to tie the game at 25 with 6:51 left in the half. The game went back and forth for the rest of the half, until Lauren Wasson's bucket with 34 seconds left put Trevecca up 36-35 at the half.
An 8-3 start to the second half pushed the Trojan lead to six (44-38) with 16:47 left, and Trevecca still led 52-46 on a bucket by Anissa Ragland with 12:00 remaining in the game. The Trojans still led 60-58 with 6:25 left when the RedHawks went on an 11-2 spurt over the 2:35 to take a 69-62 lead with 3:50 on the clock. But Anna Mitchell scored five straight points and Rachel Raby added a free throw, and it was 69-68 RedHawks with 1:45 to play.
After a free throw by Martin's Vee Young, Mitchell scored again to tie the game at 70 with 1:21 left. A three-point play by the RedHawks' Micah Anderson made it 73-70, but the Trojans continued to battle, giving themselves a chance to win it in regulation. With MMC leading 75-74 and 17 seconds on the clock, Anderson missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Kayla Biles grabbed the rebound and was fouled on her way to the basket with 11 seconds to play. After she made the first to tie the game, she missed the second shot for the lead, but Mitchell grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled with eight seconds to play. But Mitchell missed both shots, Martin Methodist was unable to get a good shot, and the game went to overtime.
The RedHawks' Becca Smithson drained a three-pointer 37 seconds into the extra period, and Martin Methodist never trailed again. The Trojans pulled within 78-77 on a pair of free throws by Haley Felker, but MMC scored the final five points of the game to come away with the win.
"This is tough loss, as all of them are," added Van Atta. We got some great individual performances today, but their depth just wore us down, I think, and they were just better in overtime when the game was won."
Raby was outstanding, scoring 23 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and adding seven assists, four steals, and two blocks. Mitchell added 21 points and Lauren Wasson added 13 points and six assists. Young led all scorers with 31 points and added 12 rebounds, and O'Neal also posted a double-double with 21 points and 12 boards.
Trevecca shot 37% (30-81) from the floor, 26% (5-19) from three-point range, and 63% (12-19) from the line. Martin Methodist shot 41% (28-68) from the field, 25% (3-12) from beyond the arc, and 73% (24-33) from the charity stripe. The RedHawks outrebounded Trevecca 57-42, including 19-17 on the offensive glass.
"We don't have much time to dwell on this one," added Van Atta. "We've got to get ready for the second half of conference season, starting Tuesday night at Mid-Continent."
