Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union Lady Bulldogs buried the Trevecca women's basketball team in a barrage of three-pointers Thursday night, routing the Trojans 102-49 at Fred Delay Gymnasium. The third-ranked Bulldogs (20-2, 7-1 TranSouth) made six of their first seven shots from beyond the arc and made 15 for the game in handing the Trojans (7-12, 3-4) their worst loss of the season.
Mt. Juliet native Rebecca Sharpe triggered the hot start for the Bulldogs, draining four consecutive three-pointers in the game's first five minutes, the last one giving Union an 18-8 lead with 15:08 to play in the half. The Trojans would get no closer, as the Bulldogs scorched the nets at a 67% clip for the half, taking a 58-22 lead into the locker room. Trevecca shot just 25% (7-28) in the opening half, making just 1-of-8 from three-point range.
"It was just a barrage tonight," said Head Coach Gary Van Atta. "Once
Rebecca hit those shots early, they just continued to feed off that
momentum, and our girls haven't been in a situation like that too many
times, and we just didn't have an answer."
The Bulldogs cooled off from the field in the second half, making 15-of-34 (44%) shots from the floor, but Union continued to have success from long range, knocking down eight more threes after the break. The Trojans couldn't gain any momentum, however, shooting just 35% in the second half, and the Bulldogs continued to pull away for the easy victory.
Trevecca's
Anna Mitchell led all scorers with 22 points, and added five rebounds.
Rachel Raby was the only other Trojan in double figures with 10, and
Anissa Ragland finished with six points and 12 rebounds. Sharpe finished with 20 points to lead Union, one of five Bulldogs in double figures. Lavanda Ross added 19 points, eight steals, six rebounds, and five assists.
The Trojans finished the night shooting 29% (15-51) from the floor, 15% (2-13) from three-point range, and 63% (17-27) from the charity stripe. Union shot 55% (35-64) from the field, 41% (15-37) from beyond the arc, and 71% (17-24) from the free throw line.
"We've just got to figure out a way to re-group from a very tough night, and get ready for Martin in front of our home fans on Saturday afternoon," added Coach Van Atta. "I give the girls a lot of credit, they continue to battle despite everything that's happened this season."
The Trojans return home Saturday to host Martin Methodist (13-7, 3-4 TranSouth) Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
