Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The 5th-ranked Trevecca Trojan softball team (46-3) won its second consecutive TranSouth tournament championship Friday afternoon with a 5-1 victory over #RV Union (41-15) at Morgan Stadium at Associates Field on the campus of Freed-Hardeman University. The win was the Trojans' 18th consecutive victory, and fifth in six games against Union this season.
All of the scoring came in the first two innings, with Union scoring its lone run in the first, while Trevecca scored three times in the first and twice more in the second.
After Union's Shelby Lamb singled home the Bulldogs' only run of the day in the top of the first inning, the Trojans responded quickly, tying the game on a bases-loaded walk to
Haylee Rogers, and taking the lead on a two-run single by
Heather Shuler.
Trevecca pushed the lead to 5-1 in the second on a two-run single by
Karli Rush, and
Riley Mashburn took care of the rest, holding the Bulldogs to just two hits over the final five innings to pick up her 20th victory of the season.
Rush and Shuler combined to go 4-6 with four RBI, one walk, and one run. For the game, the Trojans scored five runs on seven hits, while committing one error and stranding six runners on base.
Mashburn (20-3) went the distance, allowing just one run on four hits over seven innings, with four strikeouts and two walks. Brooke Thomas (23-8) took the loss for Union, her second defeat of the day at the hands of the Trojans.
The Trojans will now wait for Tuesday's announcement of the pairings for the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championships, which will take place May 19-25 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex in Gulf Shores, Ala. This will mark the fifth appearance in the last six seasons at the NAIA Championships for the Trevecca softball program. The Trojans have advanced to the Final Eight championship round in each of their previous four appearances.
