Box Score 2 BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. - The sixth-ranked Trevecca Trojans (40-3, 27-1
TranSouth) reached the 40-win plateau for the fifth time in school
history with a doubleheader sweep at Blue Mountain College (4-28, 2-18
TranSouth). It took ten innings for a 9-3 victory in game one, but the
Trojans handled the Toppers 5-0 in game two.
With its 27-1 record in conference play, Trevecca has secured at least a
tie for the regular season title. Trevecca has also secured the top
seed in the 2011 TranSouth Softball Championships with a tie-breaker
advantage over second-place Union. The TranSouth Championships will be
held May 4-7, 2011, in Henderson, Tenn., at Morgan Stadium at Associates
Field on the campus of Freed-Hardeman University.ÂÂ
Trevecca reached 40 wins in a season for the fifth time in program history. The first 40-win season was in 2006 (47-15) and since then the team has now reached the mark five times in six seasons. Trevecca's best season was in 2007 when they posted a 59-11 record. Last season the Trojans were 44-17.
This is fewest losses a Trevecca team has had as they reached their 40th win. The 2008 team was 40-5, that the second best record for a TNU softball team with 40 wins.
Trevecca, in its 20th season of softball, has had 11 winning seasons in its first 19 seasons.
The Trojans have won their last twelve games. After a 12-0 start to the season Trevecca lost two of three games. From there the Trojans rolled off 15 consecutive wins before a loss at Union. Over the last 28 games, Trevecca is 27-1.
GAME ONEWith two out in the top of the fifth inning
Melinda Patterson hit a solo home run over the center field fence to put the Trojans up 1-0.
Kelsey Lantrip was hit by a pitch and came around to score after three wild pitches during the at bat of
Kari Mason.
With on out in the top of the sixth inning
Lauren Baker hit a solo home run over the center field fence for a 3-0 Trojan lead.
It looked like the Trojans were going to pick up the shutout win, but the Toppers had an upset in mind. They waited until there were two out in the bottom of the seventh. The Toppers picked up a pair of singles, then tied the game with a first pitch three-run home run over the left field fence.
The game remained knotted at 3-3 until the 10th.
Monica West was placed at second base with the tie breaker rule. Patterson reached on a bunt-single placing runners at first and third. Lantrip hit into a fielder's choice, leaving runner's at first and third. Mason grounded out to first.
Tori Hulan was placed at third to run for West. Then the Trojan power came into play.
Karli Rush and Baker hit back-to-back doubles and
Breanna Zeis finished things off with a three-run home run over the left-center field fence.
Rush was 2-5 with a single and a double. Baker was 2-4 with an RBI, a double and a home run. Zeis was 2-5 with a double, three-RBI, and a home run. Patterson was 2-4 with a single, an RBI, and a home run.
Lauren Baker (21-0) pitched all 10 innings, allowing three runs, four walks, and eight hits, while striking out six. Brooke Denton (1-9) took the loss for the Toppers.
GAME TWOTrevecca waited until the top of the third before they put any runs on the board in game two. It was then that
Monica West singled down the right field line (
Tori Hulan came in to run for West).
Melinda Patterson singled through the hole between short and third advancing Hulan to second.
Kelsey Lantrip hit into a fielder's choice (Patterson out at second) and moving Hulan to third.
Kari Mason drove in Hulan on a ground out for a 1-0 Trojan lead. ÂÂ
In the sixth, Lantrip led off with single, Mason reached on a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Blue Mountain pitcher, scoring Lantrip in the process - putting the Trojans up 2-0.
Karli Rush delivered a sac fly to right field, scoring Mason from third for a 3-0 Trojan lead.
In the top of the seventh inning West singled through the hole between short and third (Hulan in to run for West). Hulan advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lantrip singled to right field scoring Hulan from second.
Riley Mashburn (17-3) pitched all seven innings and struck out seven on her way to a complete game shutout. Mashburn allowed just two hits and a walk.
Lantrip was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. West was 2-3.
Trevecca has four regular season games remaining. Trevecca will host Senior Night on Thursday at 4 p.m. when Freed-Hardeman University (17-18, 12-10 TranSouth) visits the Trojan Softball Complex.
Trevecca has one final regular season conference doubleheader, a yet-to-be scheduled make-up with Blue Mountain College. The Trojans and Toppers were rained out on April 11th. The teams will play at Trevecca next week. ÂÂ
