Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 6th-ranked Trevecca (38-3, 25-1 TranSouth) Trojans swept a pair of games from #RV Union (31-12, 17-5 TranSouth) Saturday afternoon, 9-8 and 4-3, winning both games in their final at-bats.
GAME ONE RECAPIn the opener, Union took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Trojans quickly tied it on a solo home run in the second inning by
Haylee Rogers, her 11th of the season. Later, the Trojans seemed to have put the game out of reach with five runs in the home half of the fourth inning.
Breanna Zeis walked to lead off the inning, and Rogers belted the next pitch over the fence in left field for her second home run of the day and 12th of the season. Trevecca would go on to add three more runs on a bases-loaded walk by
Kelsey Lantrip, an RBI single by
Karli Rush, and a sacrifice fly by
Lauren Baker.
But the Bulldogs battled back, scoring four runs in the fifth inning to cut the Trojan lead to 6-5. Union ultimately took the lead in the sixth, going ahead 8-5 on a two-out, three-run homer by first baseman Stephanie Saunders.
That set the stage for a dramatic, seventh-inning comeback by the Trojans. With one out, Zeis doubled down the leftfield line. After Rogers grounded to short for the second out of the inning,
Heather Shuler doubled into the leftfield corner to plate Zeis and draw the Trojans within one.
Monica West followed with Trevecca's third double of the inning, a deep fly ball to the fence that Union centerfielder Miranda Mullen nearly caught to end the game. Shuler scored the tying run, and
Melinda Patterson capped off the comeback, doubling home West with the game-winning run.
Lantrip went 3-3 with three doubles, a walk, and an RBI, and Rogers went 2-4 with two home runs, three RBI, and two runs. Shuler, West, and Patterson also added two hits apiece. The Trojans scored nine runs on 13 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases. Trevecca committed two errors and left seven runners on base. Union scored eight runs on 11 hits, with no errors and eight runners left on base.
Baker (20-0) picked up the win in the circle, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in seven innings of work, with 11 strikeouts and three walks. Keaton Kirk (12-5) took the loss for Union.
GAME TWO RECAPGame two started just like game one, with the Bulldogs taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Trevecca tied it on an RBI double by
Karli Rush in the third inning, but Union quickly re-took the lead with two more runs in the fourth.
It was still 3-1 when
Kari Mason led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and a stolen base. Rush followed with her fourth home run of the season, blasting a 2-1 pitch deep over the leftfield fence to tie the game.
The game remained tied at 3 until the seventh, once again setting the Trojans up for some late-game heroics. With one out in the bottom of the seventh,
Lauren Baker doubled up the alley in right-centerfield, putting the winning run in scoring position.
Breanna Zeis followed with a double up the very same alley, plating Baker with the game-winning run.
Rush paced the attack, going 2-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI, and a run scored. Baker and Mason also added two hits apiece. The Trojans scored four runs on eight hits, with no errors and nine runners left on base. Union scored three runs on eight hits, while committing two errors and stranding seven runners on base.
Riley Mashburn (16-3) went the distance for the win, giving up three runs on eight hits, with three strikeouts and three walks. Brooke Thomas (15-5) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
The Trojans will play a doubleheader Monday at 2 p.m. at Blue Mountain (4-26, 2-16 TranSouth).
