West, Mashburn Lead Trojans to Championship Game

Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - NAIA No. 19 and top-seeded Trevecca (40-14) defeated second-seeded Union University (34-15) 4-3 in the winners bracket final of the 2010 TranSouth Conference Softball Tournament. Trevecca advances to the TranSouth Championship game that will be played at about 5:15 p.m. at Trevecca's Softball Complex.

Union's Lindsey Landreneau singled to open the game and advanced to second on a stolen base. With one out Landreneau reached third on a passed ball. Ali Thomas drove Landreneau in with a double to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Breanna Zeis singled to center and scored on a Riley Mashburn double with a slide that elluded the tag by Union catcher Ali Thomas. The teams advanced to the bottom of the sixth tied 1-1.

Trevecca's Lauren Baker led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to shallow right. Two batters and two outs later, Kelsey Lantrip singled to right, advancing Baker to third. Megan Hemmingsen reached on a walk to load the bases. Karli Rush reached on a fielder's choice and Lauren Baker scored. Monica West followed with a single that scored Lantrip and Hemmingsen.

Union made it interesting in the bottom of the sixth when Amber Hayes hit a one out, two-run home run to make it a 4-3 game. Trevecca's Riley Mashburn retired the next two batters to launch the Trojans into the championship game.

Monica West was 2-4 with two RBI. Riley Mashburn (21-7) aided her own cause in the circle, going 1-3 with a double and an RBI at the plate. Kelsey Lantrip was 2-4 with a run scored.

Mashburn allowed just five hits, three runs, and a walk while striking out seven.

In the loser's bracket final sixth-seeded Bethel University eliminated third-seeded Martin Methodist 3-0. Sixth-seeded Bethel defeated second-seeded Union 3-0 to advance to the championship game against Trevecca at 5:30 p.m.

The win over Union gives Trevecca a 40-win season for just the fourth time in school history.

Trevecca, the TranSouth regular season champion, will try to win their fourth TranSouth Tournament title in the last five years. Trevecca has five TranSouth regular season titles in the last six seasons.
