Trojans Swept by Bethel

Box Score MCKENZIE, Tenn. - Trevecca (19-10, 1-2 TranSouth), receiving votes in the preseason NAIA Top 25, lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bethel University (19-2-1, 2-1 TranSouth), falling 2-1 in 10 innings in the opener and 6-4 in the nightcap.

Game one saw both teams fail to score in regulation, forcing extra innings. Trojan starter Michael Son was outstanding, allowing just three hits in seven innings while striking out eight and walking two. The Trojans finally broke the ice in the top of the eighth as Chase Birdwell reached base on a bunt single and came around to score on a Wildcat error. But Bethel came right back in the bottom of the inning as Johnathan Deberry's single scored Bryson Horner. The game stayed 1-1 until Bethel won it in the bottom of the 10th inning on a bases loaded walk given up by Jerry Young.

Young (1-2) took the loss for the Trojans, while Jordon Smith (1-0) got the win in relief for the Wildcats. The Trojans managed just four hits, two of them by first baseman Chris Hale. Birdwell went 1-2 and scored the only Trojan run.

Bethel jumped on top early in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding another in the fourth. The Trojans got one back in the fifth, but gave up three more Wildcat runs in the bottom of the inning to fall behind 6-1 and were forced to play catch-up from there. They did make it close, scoring two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, but it just wasn't enough.

Kyle Pfirrman (4-3) took the loss, but wasn't given much help from his defense, which committed four errors, leading to three unearned runs by the Wildcats. The junior lefthander gave up just five hits in five innings of work, giving up three earned runs while striking out five and walking two. Turner Cripps (5-0) earned the victory for Bethel.

Mark Hewitt, Matt Tidwell, and Brad Gooch had two hits apiece for the Trojans, while Trey Morrison, Chris Hale, and Chase Birdwell each drove in a run.

Trevecca will host Bryan College (12-17) on Tuesday, March 30 at 2 p.m.
