Trojans Sweep DH @ Bethel

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MCKENZIE, Tenn. - The Trevecca Trojan softball team (20-7, 2-0 TranSouth) opened conference play Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Bethel (8-11, 1-3), taking the first game 9-7 and the nightcap 8-2.

In game one, the Trojans scored first and looked to be on their way to an easy win. A seven-run fourth inning started with back-to-back home runs by Breanna Zeis and Monica West and ended with a two-run double by Karli Rush. Trevecca tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice by Riley Mashburn, but Bethel bounced back in a big way in the bottom of the inning with seven runs of their own to make the score 8-7 Trojans. But an RBI single by Rush in the sixth closed the scoring and the Trojans held on for the win.

Rush went 2-4 with a double and three runs batted in, Kelsey Lantrip went 4-5 with an RBI and a run scored, Megan Hemmingsen went 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Zeis went 3-4 with her eighth home run, tying her with Anais Puertas for the team lead. Riley Mashburn (11-3) had the one bad inning, but was otherwise effective in picking up the win. The sophomore gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs in seven innings of work, while striking out six and walking two.

Game two wasn't as close, as the Trojans picked up their 20th win of the season. Trevecca
scored first again, jumping on top 2-0 in the second inning on an RBI single by Puertas
and an RBI groundout by Rush. The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a
2-run home run by Amanda Renfroe, but the Trojans came right back with three runs in the
fifth inning and three more in the sixth to put the game away. The fifth inning runs came
courtesy of a Karli Rush 2-run homer and an RBI double by Monica West, while the Trojan
scoring in the sixth came via an RBI single by Megan Hemmingsen, an error, and an RBI
double by Anais Puertas.

Rush went 2-4 with a home run and three more runs batted in, giving her four hits and six runs batted in for the day. Puertas added three hits and two runs batted in, while Lantrip and Hemmingsen added two hits apiece. Lauren Baker (9-4) pitched a complete game, giving up both runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking three.

The Trojans are right back at it on Saturday, traveling to Mid-Continent University (3-13-1, 0-2) for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
