Trevecca Breaks FHU's 20-Match Home Streak

Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Trojan volleyball team (12-9, 4-3 TranSouth) picked up its third consecutive win--all on the road--Thursday night, with a 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 29-27 win over #RV Freed-Hardeman (5-6, 4-2 TranSouth). It ended the Lions 20-match home winning streak that dated back to September 2008.

The win is also the first regular season win for Trevecca over Freed-Hardeman since October, 28, 2003. Trevecca did upset top ranked FHU in the TranSouth tournament in the fall of 2008. The win breaks a three-match win streak for FHU, but the Lions had won 12 straight regular season matches over the Trojans and 14 of the last 15 meetings (including postseason play).

Trevecca took a nine-point lead in the first two sets but came up a little short both times. In the first set, the Trojans jump up 20-11 but saw the homestanding Lions get back to within two points at 24-22 before Trevecca finished off the set.

It was almost the exact same score in set two at 21-12, and again Freed-Hardeman rallied to get within four points.  However, Trevecca went up 2-0 with a 25-20 set win.

The Lions turned the tables in the third set, taking the first 10 points to build a commanding lead. This time it was Trevecca who made the comeback, pulling within two points at 21-19 before FHU pushed ahead to stay alive with a 25-21 win.

The fourth set went back and forth with neither team holding more than a two-point cushion until TNU was able to open a four-point lead at 18-14 and again at 20-16 After FHU rallied to tie the match at 23-23, the Trojans had match point but failed to close the door. Freed-Hardeman then had three chances to even the match at set point, but each time Trevecca stayed alive and eventually took the match by pulling off three straight points to win 29-27.

Maddie  Burford had 15 kills, 11 digs, five block assists, and two service aces, Cassidy Watkins had 16 kills, one solo block, and two block assists, and Kristen Johnson added 11 kills, 14 digs, three solo blocks and two block assists. Brooke Cannon had 52 assists and added eight digs, while Halley Wiggins led the Trojans in digs with 28 and Haley White and Shelby Sorce added 19 digs apiece.

Trevecca steps back out of conference for a match with Campbellsville (14-3) Monday night at 6 p.m. at Moore Gym. The team returns to conference play with Martin Methodist (9-12, 4-3 TSAC) visiting on Tuesday (10/5) at 7 p.m.
