JACKSON, Tenn. - NAIA No. 9 Trevecca (25-7) fell 92-69 at No. 1
Union University (32-1) on Monday in the TranSouth Championship. Trevecca was
the third seed in the tournament, while Union is the top seed. Union
won the regular season and tournament championship this season.
Trevecca's
Jennifer Bognar and K.C. Van Atta were named to the TranSouth
All-Tournament team. Union's Merideth Jacobs and Josephine Owino were
also named to the team. Owino was named the Tournament MVP.
Union
pulled ahead 10-4 early and later led 21-12 with 13:25 remaining in the
first half. Trevecca cut the lead to four (25-21) with 9:23 remaining
in the half. Christian Gibson hit a three-pointer that cut the Union
lead to two points (32-30) with 6:08 remaining in the half. The
Bulldogs pulled ahead by 10 at the break, 37-27.
Trevecca
hit two field goals to start the second half and closed the Union lead
to six points (47-41). The Bulldogs turned on their offense and pulled
away with a 12-0 run that put them up by 18 (59-41) with 15:35 to go.
The Trojans were never able to cut the Union lead inside of double
digits and the Bulldogs won their third consecutive TranSouth
Tournament Championship. Union hasn't lost in the TranSouth tournament
in more than three years.

Van Atta led Trevecca with 16 points, 14 in the first half. Van Atta
added five rebounds. Abby Lawson scored 13 points despite suffering
foul trouble. Lawson also had five rebounds and a team high three
assists. As a team the Trojans were 26-62 (43%) from the field, 8-23
(35%) from three-point range, and 9-12 (75%) from the foul line. Union
outrebounded the Trojans 37-30. Trevecca had 13 turnovers, Union had
11. Josephine Owino led the Bulldogs with 24 points and 15 rebounds.
Another bid difference was the points in the paint where the Bulldogs
had a 40-22 advantage.
Trevecca is assured of reaching their 10th
consecutive NAIA Division 1 Women's Basketball Tournament. The
tournament will begin on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in Jackson, Tenn. at
Oman Arena. The 2009 tournament seedings and bracket will be released
by the middle of this week.
