Trojans Prevail, Beat Union

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trojans (15-8, 6-3 TSAC) were able to fight off a tough Union University (22-4, 6-4 TSAC) team this evening winning in straight sets: 25-23, 26-24, 29-27. The win puts Trevecca in sole position of third place in the TranSouth Conference standings and leaves six more TranSouth games to go.

 

In the first set Trevecca had a prevailing lead up 23-15 but struggled to finish the game. With the score at 24-23 Trevecca's Kristen Evans put the game away with a kill.

 

In the second set the Trojans found themselves down 17-11 and Union seemed to be pulling away with the set. A kill by Jennifer Peterson and consecutive kills by Rachel Spotten, Brooke Cannon had assists on all three kills, help fuel the Trojans. Trevecca fought back tying the set up at 21-21 and was able to win the set 26-24 by a kill from Jennifer Peterson and Teegan Hunziker receiving credit for the assist.

 

In the third set Union University seemed to find the groove and the Trojans found them down again 12-8. Back-to-back kills by Kaley Ward and Jennifer Peterson found the Trojans all tied up with the Bulldogs at 14-14. The set went back and forth with no team taking a decisive lead. With the score at 27-27 Halley Wiggins assisted a kill by Kristen Evans followed by an attack error from Union and Trevecca prevailed 29-27.

 

Leaders for the Trojans were Kaley Ward with three spikes and 15 kills and Jennifer Peterson with three spikes and 12 kills. Teegan Hunziker had 10 kills and a game high 23 digs closely followed with Haley White's 16 digs. Brooke Cannon had 24 assists along with two service aces and Halley Wiggins finished up with 20 assists.

 

Next up for Trevecca will be the Lindenwood Tournament tomorrow and Saturday in St. Louis, Missouri. On Friday the Trojans will face Dana College (Neb.) (14-10) at 3 p.m. and Oklahoma City University (11-14) at 7 p.m. On Saturday the Trojans will face two challenging and NAIA top 25 ranked teams with #4 Columbia College (Mo.) (19-1) at 11:30 a.m. and host #22 Lindenwood University (21-6) at 3:30 p.m.
