JACKSON, Tenn. - Trevecca (19-10) provided some surprises during the opening day of the TranSouth Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament at Union University today. Trevecca earned the No. 3 Seed which pitted them in a first round match with Cumberland University (20-16).

Cumberland upset the Trojans 23-25, 25-11, 21-25, 25-15, 3-15. Trevecca bounced back with a 22-25, 25-21, 25-9, 25-15 win over Martin Methodist College. Trevecca captured a major upset when they eliminated Freed-Hardeman University, the tournament's top seed, 26-24, 14-25, 25-21, 25-23.

Cumberland Match Recap

The first set went to the Bulldogs who took and early 10-5 lead. the Trojans closed to within a point at 10-9, 22-21 and at 23-22, but the Trojans could get no closer and fell 25-23. Set two saw the Trojans take an early 5-3 lead, then blow the set wide open as freshman Halley Wiggins served the Trojans on an 11-0 run, and TNU leveled the match with a 25-11 victory. Trevecca led early in the third, but Cumberland tied things up at 12. Trevecca took a three point edge, but CU's 7-0 run gave them a 19-15 lead and later a 25-21 victory. Cumberland led the fourth set 15-13 when the Trojans turned to Kelly Huff. Huff served out the set, leading the Trojans on a 12-0 run and a set 25-15 victory. In the fifth set, however, it was all Bulldogs. Cumberland took six of the first seven points and never looked back, taking the set and the match 15-3. 

Ashton O'Halloran led the Trojans with 17 kills, Kelly Huff posted 41 assists, and Kimi Coffey had 44 digs in the loss.

Martin Methodist Match Recap

Trevecca did battle with the No. 7 seed Martin Methodist RedHawks (2-29), taking the match from the RedHawks three sets to one. 

Martin Methodist came out strong, taking a 18-9 lead. Martin closed out the first set 25-22. The second set was tight, with neither team taking a lead of more than three points. There were nine times, with the last coming at 11-11. Trevecca slowly pulled away, securing the 25-21 victory. The turning point of the match came in the third set. Jessica Hood opened the set as the Trojans' server, and led the Trojans on an 8-0 run out of the gate. The Trojans finished the set on a 15-1 run. In the fourth set the Trojans' strung together a 5-1 run and a 7-1 run to stretch their lead to 23-13, en route to the 25-15 win. 

Hood (11 K, 15 D) and O'Halloran (23 K 17 D) each recorded double-doubles in the win. Huff chipped in 41 assists, Coffey added 17 digs, and Kaley Ward notched 10 kills as well. 

Freed-Hardeman Match Recap

In the elimination match with the top-seeded Freed Hardeman (32-5) the Trojans sent home the heavily favored Lions 3 sets to 1.

Set number one saw neither team have more than a two point advantage. Freed led just twice in the set, at 8-7 and 11-10, and the Trojans emerged victorious 26-24. In the second set, the Trojans started strong, but the Lions stormed back with a 9-0 run to take a 13-5 lead and never looked back with a 25-14.

In the third set, the Lions quickly built a 6-3 lead, but this time it was the Trojans who fought back with a 6-1 run. Trevecca took the lead for good at 18-17 on a block by Rachel Spotten, winning the third set 25-21. In the fourth set, Trevecca led 18-11 lead and seemingly putting the match out of reach. The Lions. however, rattled off a 10-0 run to take a 21-18 lead. TNU coach Jayme Crowley's bunch, however, dug deep and found a way to pull it out, as freshman Kristen Evans provided the exclamation point on the win with a solo block on Freed's Sydney Rice, sending the Lions back to Henderson, and the Trojans on to the tournament's final day, 25-23.
 

O'Halloran (14 K, 10 D) and Huff (29 A, 12 D) each had double-doubles in the match, Coffey (14) and Halley Wiggins (10) each posted double-digit digs, and Spotten notched five solo blocks in the win.

Tuesday Play

Trevecca will play a rematch with the Cumberland Bulldogs (21-17) at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. The winner will play the loser of the 11 a.m. Lyon College/Union University match for a spot in the TranSouth Championship match.
