NASHVILLE – After a slow start to the 2026 season in the non-conference portion of the schedule, the Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team has begun to right the ship as the Gulf South Conference season has gotten underway. As the conference slate has reached the quarter pole, the Trojans are trending well in the GSC, and on Saturday, Trevecca kept pace with the leaders in the GSC.
Trevecca (6-8, 4-1 GSC) wrapped up a 3-0 homestand in the GSC with another hard-fought win - this one over the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers (4-12, 0-5 GSC) in four sets, 25-15, 25-22, 15-25, 25-19.
SERIES HISTORY
Trevecca has won seven of the 12 meetings in the series in the rally scoring era, including six of the last seven and three straight. On the strength of dominance of the series in the 70s and 80s, though, CBU leads the all-time series 53-9.
MATCH RECAP
The teams split the first six points of the match, but Trevecca's Jordan Hunt blasted a kill to give Trevecca the lead, and that ignited a 5-1 Trevecca run as the Trojans opened an 8-4 advantage. The margin remained at four into the middle stages of the frame, but a kill from Isabella Sherrod sparked a 7-0 spurt that included two kills from Sherrod, single kills from Katilyn Grant and Brynne Krangnes, and a pair of blocks to push the Trevecca advantage to 20-13. Grant added three more kills late in the set as the Trojans took the opening set win 25-15.
The Trojans took the first four points of the second stanza, but the Buccaneers battled and kept things close early. A 5-1 Trevecca run that featured two more kills by Sherrod helped the Trojans open a 12-7 lead. Moments later, the Trojans duplicated the spurt to push their lead to 18-11, but as things got late in the second frame, a 6-2 CBU stretch closed the gap to 22-21. Grant, though, found the floor for a kill to answer the run, and the Trojans took three of the final four points to grab the set win 25-22.
With the score tied at four in the third set, CBU dug deep and mounted a charge. The Buccaneers started with a 5-1 run that opened a 9-5 lead, CBU held the lead the rest of the way, as the Trojans closed to within four at 17-13. The Bucs, though, held the line and closed the set out with an 8-2 run to stave off the defeat and take the set 25-15.
Neither team won a point on serve in the fourth set until Zoie Elrod served back-to-back service aces with the score tied at 4-4. She added a third ace moments later as a part of a 7-1 run that helped Trevecca take an 11-5 lead. An ace from Lilly Vanbebber capped of a later 4-0 run that pushed the Trojans lead out to 16-8, and while Christian Brothers twice narrowed the margin to five late in the set, Grant put the match away with the match-ending kill to give the Trojans the set win 25-19 to complete the 3-1 victory.
