Trevecca Nazarene University

NASHVILLE – One of the oldest rivals of the Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team made the trip up I-40 from Jackson, Tennessee on Friday. The Trojans hosted the Union University Bulldogs - with whom the Trojans have shared four different conferences over the last half-century, and Trevecca inched closer to leveling the all-time series. 

 

Trevecca (5-8, 3-1 GSC) used a balanced attack led by Emma Schnitzer and Katilyn Grant to take down Union (4-10, 0-4 GSC) in a 3-0 sweep, 25-20, 25-12, 25-22. 

 

  

The Trojans have faced the Bulldogs more than nearly any other opponent in their program's history. The meeting on Friday was the 59th all-time in the series, with Union holding the 31-28 all time edge. In the rally scoring era (Since 2000), the Bulldogs have a 26-22 advantage, but Trevecca has won nine of the last 10 matches in the series dating back to a 3-0 win in Nashville on September 9, 2015. 

  

Trevecca roared out of the gate. The Bulldogs scored first, but the Trojans answered immediately with an 11-2 run to take an 11-3 lead. During that run, Isabella Sherrod had three kills and a block, Katilyn Grand also scored on three kills and participated in a clock, and Emma Schnitzer blasted a pair of swings to the floor. Union battled all the way back to within a single point at 18-17, but Grant added three more kills late in the frame, and the Trojans took set one 25-20. 

 

The Bulldogs again scratched out the first point of set two as Trevecca was victimized by a serve that crept over the tape for an ace, but Trevecca again had an emphatic answer. Kills from Schnitzer and Brynne Krangnes book-ended a 5-0 stretch that was a part of a larger 8-1 run as the Trojans opened an 8-2 lead. Union again scrapped their way back into the set with a 9-3 run that closed the gap to 11-9, but Trevecca regained their footing and at the technical timeout in set two, the Trojans led 15-10. Schnitzer had consecutive kills out of the timeout, and that helped the Trojans take command in the frame on their way to the 25-12 to take the 2-0 lead in the match. 

 

Union opened an early 7-3 lead in the third set, but the Trojans battled back. Trevecca closed to within one at 14-13 prior to the technical timeout, and after the break, Trevecca got a kill from Sherrod and a bad set from Union to tie things up at 15 all. The Trojans tied things again at 18 and at 19, but it was not until Sherrod and Jordan Hunt came up with a block to put the Trojans ahead 20-19 that Trevecca tasted the lead in the third stanza. Union battled back out in front with a 3-0 run to take a 22-20 lead, but after a Trevecca timeout, Schnitzer finished things off with a trio of kills as a part of a 5-0 run that closed the set in a 25-22 Trevecca victory to complete the sweep. 

 

• Emma Schnitzer led the Trojans with 18 kills, and Katilyn Grant added 13 of her own. Isabella Sherrod chipped in seven kills as well. 

• Brynne Krangnes notched the double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs for her first double-double as a Trojan. 

• Lilly Vanbebber notched 21 digs in the match, as she pushed her career total beyond the 1,000 barrier. She is the seventh Trojan in the NCAA era to reach the 1,000 digs plateau.  

• Jordan Hunt participated in five blocks.
