Trevecca Women's Soccer | Trojans Rally Late to Upend Chargers in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.Under bright sunny skies in northern Alabama, the Trevecca Nazarene University women's soccer team concluded their four-match road trip that included their first two Gulf South Conference matches of the season. The Trojans had dropped their two middle matches of the trip, but on Wednesday afternoon, Trevecca wrapped up the trip in style.

Trevecca (3-2-1, 1-1-0 GSC) fell into an early hole, but in the span of nearly exactly six minutes late in the match, the Trojans scored a pair of goals and claimed the road win over the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (3-3-0, 1-1-0), 2-1

THE SERIES
The win for the Trojans snapped a four-match winless skid against the Chargers that dated back more than five years. The last time Trevecca had defeated the Chargers was on September 9, 2021 - a 3-2 win in Nashville. The victory was the first for the Trojans ever in Huntsville.

THE MATCH
After a foul was whistled against the Trojans in the 18th minute, the Chargers broke through. Trevecca forced the ball all the way back to the halfway line, but UAH brought it in along the left wing side. Chelsey Curtis took a pass and dribbled wide around the Trojan defense and lofted a shot from just outside the box that snuck inside the far post to give UAH the 1-0 lead.

Trevecca carried a lot of the pressure in the opening half - they out-shot the Chargers 8-2 in the first 45 minutes - but UAH goalkeeper CeCe Szopa turned aside three Trevecca shots on target and at intermission, Trevecca trailed 1-0.

The Chargers continued to lead for the first part of the second period, and Trevecca struggled to build any offensive attack. The Trojans had a shot in the 48th minute, and that resulted in a corner kick opportunity, but the next Trevecca opportunity did not present itself for another 20 minutes. On that chance, though, the momentum and direction of the match changed.

Trevecca earned a free kick from just outside the top of the area that was taken by Cristina Escudero. She placed the ball down on the arc and sent the ball curling around the wall and into the net to level the score at 1-1. That spurred the Trojans, and six minutes later, it was Anna Farrell who converted a pass from Kate Nelson to put Trevecca up 2-1. UAH did manage to get a corner kick in the 81st minute, but the Trojans were able to turn away the attack, and Trevecca held on for the 2-1 win.
