MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's soccer team opened Gulf South Conference play by extending the best start in program history, battling the University of Montevallo to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Varsity Soccer Field.
Trevecca (4-0-1, 0-0-1 GSC) remained unbeaten through the first five matches of a season for the first time in program history.
Montevallo (0-2-2, 0-0-1 GSC) struck first, but
Chris Douglas supplied the equalizer early in the second half with
Haden Brown providing the assist.
The conference opener featured two teams looking to outperform their preseason projections.
Montevallo was picked fifth in the 2026 GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 59 points, while Trevecca was selected eighth with 42 points.
THE SERIES
The draw gives Trevecca its first result against Montevallo in the fourth meeting between the programs.
Montevallo now leads the all-time series 3-0-1.
The Falcons won the inaugural meeting 4-0 in Chattanooga in 2017 and took a 3-0 decision in Montevallo in 2024. Montevallo won 3-2 in Nashville last season before the Trojans earned Saturday's road draw.
THE MATCH
Montevallo broke through in the 22nd minute.
Joaquin Wladdimiro scored his second goal of the season at 21:40 to put the Falcons in front, 1-0.
The home side carried that advantage into halftime after producing five shots and four corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes.
Trevecca found its answer less than nine minutes after the restart.
Haden Brown helped create the opportunity and
Chris Douglas supplied the finish at 53:52 to pull the Trojans level at 1-1.
The goal was Douglas' fifth of the season, extending his team-leading total through the opening five matches. Brown collected his second assist of the season.
Neither side found the winner over the final 36 minutes as the Trojans secured a point in their GSC opener.
DOUGLAS CONTINUES FAST START
Douglas has scored in four of Trevecca's first five matches.
The junior forward opened the season with a goal against King, scored against Thomas More, added two goals against Johnson University and supplied Saturday's equalizer at Montevallo.
Douglas now has five goals through five matches after scoring five goals during the entire 2025 season.
BY THE NUMBERS
Montevallo finished with an 11-6 advantage in shots and put five attempts on goal. Trevecca placed three of its six shots on frame.
The Falcons held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Trevecca goalkeeper
Hunter Walker played all 90 minutes and was credited with three saves.
Daniel Shiel led Trevecca with three shots, including one on goal.
Jack Franklin and Douglas each put their only shot on frame.
Trevecca and Montevallo were each whistled for 11 fouls.
BEST START CONTINUES
The draw extends Trevecca's unbeaten start to 4-0-1.
The Trojans had already matched the best four-game start in program history by opening 4-0, equaling the 2006 team.
Saturday's result pushed the 2026 Trojans beyond that mark as the first Trevecca men's soccer team to go unbeaten through its opening five matches.
Trevecca has outscored its opponents 11-3 through those five matches and has recorded three clean sheets.
NEXT FOR THE TROJANS
Trevecca stays on the road Wednesday, Sept. 16, in a massive early batting between the two remaining undefeated teams in the Gulf South. TNU travels to Huntsville, Alabama, to face the University of Alabama in Huntsville (4-0-0, 1-0-0 GSC) at 7:30 p.m. at Charger Park.
UAH was selected fourth in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 68 points, one spot ahead of Montevallo.
Trevecca leads the all-time series with the Chargers 5-2-2 and has won four of the last five meetings.
The Trojans are 3-1 all-time in Huntsville and have outscored UAH 13-10 in the series.
