NASHVILLE — Year two of the Matheus Mello era for the Trevecca Nazarene University women's soccer team got underway on Thursday afternoon, as the Trojans played host to the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University. Thanks to a pair of Annas, the Trojans were able to overcome an early deficit to earn a draw in their season opener.
Trevecca (0-0-1) got a tying goal late in the match from Anna Allen, which completed a comeback to earn a 2-2 draw with the Railsplitters (0-0-1) at the Trevecca Soccer Pitch.
THE SERIES
Trevecca is now 3-1-1 all-time vs. the Railsplitters, including a 3-0-1 record in Nashville. The Trojans are also unbeaten in their last three matches against LMU, dating back to a 3-2 home win in October of 2014.
THE MATCH
The match got underway in the hot late-summer sun, and the Railsplitters jumped out to an early lead. Riley Miller opened the scoring in the match exactly four minutes in, and less than eight minutes later, LMU's lead doubled on a goal from Norah Alcorn.
Faced with the 2-0 deficit, the Trojans got to work applying pressure. Anna Farrell got the Trojans on the board only 4:46 after the second LMU tally, when she slotted home a feed from Kylie Bradshaw to cut the deficit to 2-1. Anny Mitra forced LMU goalkeeper Emma Cooke to make a save on the low left side of the goal in the 27th minute, and Trevecca kept up the pressure in the waning moments of the half. The Trojans took five of the final seven shots of the frame, but Cooke was equal to the task, and at intermission, LMU continued to lead 2-1.
Miller got the first shot of the second half for LMU in the 51st minute, but it was stopped by Mary Bauchou in goal for Trevecca, and the margin remained a single goal. The Railsplitters recorded four of the first six shots after halftime, but as the clock wound down, LMU spent more time defending. Trevecca maintained much of the possession in the final half hour, as they out-shot the Railsplitters 4-0 in the final 30 minutes. Trevecca's continued pressure finally paid off in the 83rd minute. Kayelee Maners sent a ball to Anna Allen who ripped home the equalizer from just inside the penalty area with only 7:12 remaining in the match. Moments later, Allen had a chance to put the Trojans in front, but the shot went high and the Trojans settled for a 2-2 draw.
Trevecca out-shot LMU 12-8 in the match, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Trojans did not record a corner in the match, while they yielded for corner kick opportunities to the Railsplitters.
