Trevecca Women's Basketball| Trojans Fall at VSU; Massive Game at Lee up Next

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The trip south to the Gulf Coast is always a difficult one in the Gulf South Conference, and the Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team headed into their game on Saturday at Valdosta State University with a chance to sweep the trip. Unfortunately for Trevecca, the Blazers were able to hold serve on their home court.

Trevecca (14-8, 11-6 GSC) struggled to shoot the basketball from long range, and Valdosta State (12-10, 9-7 GSC) took advantage for the 78-64 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Valdosta State jumped out with a 7-0 run in the opening quarter, but the Trojans fought back to trim their deficit to 15-14 lead on a 3-point play from Jordan Gillies with just less than two minutes left in the frame. The teams traded pairs of free throws in the final minute, with Ava Jones cashing in a pair of charity tosses with eight seconds left in the first, and after 10 minutes, Trevecca trailed by just one, 17-16.

Tatum Shaw knotted the score with 7:54 to go in the opening half when she buried a 3-pointer, but VSU scored six of the next seven points to take the lead back, 27-22. Cheyenne Trotter and Shinae Howard Johnson each scored late in the opening half to close the gap to three, but each time, VSU answered, and at intermission, the Blazers led 33-26.

Both teams had their best offensive quarter coming out of the halftime break. Trevecca scored 23 points in the frame, and they made nine of their 16 shot attempts. They made only one from deep, though, and VSU was 11-for-17 in the period with 27 points. The Blazers took an 11-point lead into the final quarter as a result, with VSU holding the 60-49 lead heading to the fourth.

Gillies connected from deep at the 8:02 mark of the fourth to open the Trojans fourth quarter scoring, but VSU had opened their lead to 15 points at that juncture, and the Trojans were not able to meaningfully close the gap after that. The Blazers' advantage was in double digits for the entirety of the final 10 minutes, and VSU took the win, 78-64

THE TEAM

Saturday was a bit of an off-shooting day for the Trojans all around. They were only 24-for-64 (37.5%) from the floor, and just 4-for-21 (19%) from beyond the arc. The Trojans were 12-for-15 (80%) from the free throw stripe in the game. The Trojans out-rebounded VSU 40-32, and they scored 16 second chance points to only 12 for the Blazers, but the Blazers racked up 21 points off Trevecca turnovers in the game.

THE PLAYERS

Gillies and Trotter each had double-doubles again. For Gillies, She notched her fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Trotter posted her third straight double-double - and her 12th of the season - with 12 points and 11 boards. Jones and Shaw each added a baker's dozen points in the game, and Gillies dished out a team best six assists along with three steals.

UP NEXT

Trevecca will wrap up their road trip one week from today with a massive game in the GSC race. The Trojans will head east to take on long-time foe Lee University (15-7, 11-6 GSC) at Lee's Paul Dana Walker Arena on Valentines Day at 1 p.m. CT. The Trojans defeated the Flames in Nashville in January, 71-51, and the teams are currently tied for third in the GSC standings.
