Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans Rally to Douse Flames Late; Hosting Final Regular Season Home Games Next Week

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team hit the road on Saturday for their last game of a three game road trip. The Trojans went down I-24 and took on a familiar foe in the Lee University Flames, but even in a tough road environment, the Trojans emerged victorious to solidify their place in the GSC standings with two weeks left in the season.

Trevecca (15-8, 12-6 GSC) completed the season sweep of Lee (15-8, 11-7 GSC) as they erased an eight-point halftime deficit to take the win, 71-69.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started as a back and forth affair, but with Trevecca leading 8-7, Lee rattled off a 10-0 run as Trevecca went nearly six and a half minutes without scoring. A pair of free throws from Ava Jones and a 3-pointer from Tatum Shaw pulled Trevecca to within four at 17-13, but Lee scored six of the last 10 points of the first quarter, and after 10 minutes of play, Lee held the 23-17 lead.

Trevecca kept things close in the second quarter. Lee spent the entire 10 minutes with the lead, but the Trojans kept them in their sights. A jumper from Shaw just shy of two minutes into the quarter pulled Trevecca within two at 23-21. Cheyenne Trotter, Jones, and Shaw each scored in the subsequent minutes to keep the margin at two, but Lee held the lead, and the Flames closed the half on a quick 5-0 spurt to take a 37-29 lead into the locker room.

Lee quickly pushed their lead to nine in the opening moments of the third stanza. Trevecca struggled to cut into the gap, and with 3:49 to play, Lee took their largest lead of the game at 48-38. With 2:42 to play, though, the Trojans began to assert themselves. Jordan Gillies scored at the rim, and on the Trojans next possession, Jayda Woods did as well to pull back within five at 50-45. With 1:39 left in the period, it was Shaw again connecting from deep, and the Trojans held Lee off the scoreboard for the final 2:42 of play. Headed to the fourth, the Trojans still trailed, but the margin was just two at 50-48.

Early in the fourth, Shaw and Brianna Burgess each scored to pull Trevecca within one point, but Lee continued to hold the Trojans at bay. The Flames pushed their lead up to four again with 6:09 to play, but the Trevecca finally broke through.

Shaw connected from distance with 4:31 to go in the game, and after an offensive foul and a media timeout, Burgess knocked in a triple to give the Trojans the lead at 61-59 - their first lead since it was 8-7 with 7:17 to play in the first quarter. Lee tied the score just 30 seconds later, but another Burgess 3-pointer, and another score from Trotter in the paint put Trevecca up 66-61, and Trevecca held the lead the rest of the way. Lee closed the gap to one at the 1:31 mark, and with just six seconds to play, the Flames scored to cut the margin to 69-67, but Shaw buried two key free throws that provided the difference in the game, as the Trojans conceded a buzzer-beater, but held on for the 71-69 win.

THE TEAM
Trevecca was red-hot from long range in the game, as the Trojans actually out-shot their overall shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Trevecca made 15 of 28 (53.6%) shots from long range, and 23 of 56 (41.1%) overall in the game. At the line, the Trojans were 10-for-15. Lee out-rebounded Trevecca 33-29, but Trevecca outscored Lee 12-4 on second chances, and they turned 14 Flames turnovers into 21 points in the win.

THE PLAYERS
Shaw led all scorers in the game with 25 points on 8-for-12 shooting including a 6-for-9 mark from beyond the arc. Burgess tallied 16 in the game, and Gillies added 14. Trotter narrowly missed a double-double as she chipped in eight points and a game-leading nine rebounds. Gillies also dished out a game-high seven assists.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will return home for their final two home games of the 2025-26 regular season on Thursday, February 19 and Saturday, February 21. The Trojans will take on the Choctaws of Mississippi College (9-14, 8-10 GSC) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., before hosting Senior Day festivities against Delta State University (15-9, 13-6 GSC) on Saturday at 2 p.m. With four games remaining in the GSC schedule, Trevecca is currently tied for third with Union University (Tenn.), and the two teams are a half-game behind Delta State for second in the Gulf South.
