Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trotter's Historic Night Leads Trojans into Second Place Tie in GSC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With the 2025-26 Gulf South Conference season winding down, the Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team has clinched their spot in the postseason, though their potential seeding remains wide open. Trevecca could finish as high as second in the league, but the Trojans are also in a position where each of their last four games are crucial to ensure a home game in the quarterfinal round.

Trevecca (16-8, 13-6 GSC) opened their final home week of the regular season on Thursday, and in a high-scoring affair, the Trojans downed the Mississippi College Choctaws (9-16, 8-12 GSC) 87-77.

In the game, and with numerous Trojan basketball alumni in attendance, Trevecca senior Cheyenne Trotter became the 15th member of the 1,000-point club - and just the fourth to accomplish the feat since the Trojans moved to NCAA Division II.

HOW IT HAPPENED

To say the game was played at a frenetic pace in the first half would be an understatement. The teams combined for 87 points and 15 turnovers in the first half - but for most of the time, it was Trevecca setting the pace. Trevecca opened the game on an 8-2 run, but the Trojans were unable to shake the Choctaws. Mississippi College rallied to tie the game at 16 with just more than two minutes left in the period. Trevecca scored eight of the final 14 points in the quarter, and at the first quarter break, Trevecca held the lead, 24-22.

Early in the second frame, Trotter officially reached the 1,000-point threshold, but early in the frame, the Choctaws inched their way in front, 29-26. With 8:29 remaining in the first half, Jordan Gillies buried a 3-pointer that set off an 11-0 run that put Trevecca up 37-28. Again, Mississippi College closed the gap to two at 40-38, and at intermission, Trevecca continued to enjoy the lead at 45-42.

Trotter scored the first eleven points for the Trojans in the frame, as she began to take control of the game down low. During the opening 5:01 of the third, Trotter's efforts helped the Trojans lead reach double digits at 56-46, and the Trojans slowly inched away. In the final three minutes of the stanza, the Trojans held the Choctaws off the scoreboard and put together a 7-0 run that gave the Trojans a 63-51 lead with 10 minutes to play.

A pair of quick triples from the Trojans - one from Brianna Burgess, and another from Gillies - to open the final quarter stretched the lead to 18 at 69-51, and as the clock wound down, the Trojans focused on managing the gap. The Choctaws tried to close the gap, but each time, Trevecca had an answer, and the Trojans cruised in with the win, 87-77.

THE TEAM

The Trojans made 30 of 67 (44.8%) and they were 9-for-24 (37.5%) from deep. Trevecca also did well at the line in the game, where they were 18-for-25 (72%). Trevecca reeled in a whopping 50 rebounds - the second time this season the Trojans have grabbed that many boards - and as a result they dominated in the painted area. They outscored MC 40-30 in the paint, and TNU held a 16-9 edge in second chance scoring.

THE PLAYERS

Trotter's night was historic for several reasons. In addition to joining the 1,000-point club, she tallied a career-high 30 points. She also set a new NCAA-era record with 18 rebounds - the most boards a Trojan has collected in a game since TNU Hall-of-Famer Jackie Weaver gathered in 19 boards at home against Lyon College (Ark.) on February 28, 2006.

In addition to the outstanding effort from Trotter, Trevecca had two other players in double figures. Tatum Shaw scored 21, marking the third time this season she has eclipsed the 20-point mark. Jordan Gillies also added 15 points. Gillies also had eight rebounds in the game, and Natalia Hernandez dealt out a team-leading four assists.

GSC RACE

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Trojans remain right in the thick of the conference race. The Trojans' win, coupled with a loss from Delta State University at Lee University, have Trevecca currently tied for second in the GSC with Union University. Alabama-Huntsville has locked up the top spot in the GSC regular season, but the second through sixth spots are all tightly packed. The Trojans and Union Bulldogs are tied at 13-6 in league play, and Delta State sits a half game back in fourth with a record of 13-7. Lee trails Trevecca and Union by one game at 12-7 and the Flames are currently in fifth, while Valdosta State is two games back of second in sixth with a conference mark of 11-8. The top four teams in the final standings will earn a home court opportunity in the quarterfinal round of the GSC Championship.

UP NEXT

Trevecca will host Senior Day festivities against Delta State University (15-9, 13-6 GSC) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
