Trevecca Women's Basketball | Sluggish Second Half Costs Trojans in 76-67 Loss to DSU; Critical Matchup at Union (Tenn.) Thursday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – At halftime of their game on Saturday afternoon, the Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team appeared poised to take a stranglehold on the possibility of hosting a Gulf South Conference tournament quarterfinal game. After the second half, the Trojans are still in position to host a postseason game, but their position is much more precarious.

Trevecca (16-9, 13-7 GSC) endured a cold-shooting second half, where they shot just a tick below 36% from the floor including just 17% from long distance, as Delta State University (16-10, 14-7 GSC) made half of their shots and rallied for a 76-67 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Delta State scored the first five points of the game, but Trevecca answered quickly. The Trojans put together a 9-2 run that spanned nearly three minutes, and a Jordan Gillies layup with 6:02 to play gave the Trojans their first lead at 9-7. The game remained close through the remainder of the first quarter, and with 10 seconds left in the period, Gillies connected from deep to give the Trojans a 20-19 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter belonged to the Trojans. Trevecca held Delta State to only two made field goals in the quarter, meanwhile, the Trojans surged. Brianna Burgess connected from long range to open the quarter, and Gillies followed that with a layup and a made free throw. Jayda Woods and Tatum Shaw each scored at the rim, and Shinae Howard buried a pair of charity tosses as Trevecca built their lead to 10 at 32-22 before taking a 32-26 lead into the half.

The Lady Statesmen answered in the third, though. A quick 8-2 DSU run tied the score at 34, and after Trevecca answered with a 3-pointer from Burgess and a layup from Natalia Hernandez, DSU rattled off six consecutive points to take the lead back at 40-39. DSU pushed their lead out to six with a late 5-0 spurt, and headed to the fourth, Trevecca trailed 47-44.

Delta State quickly opened the margin to eight in the final frame, as they opened the period on a 7-2 run that saw Trevecca make only one of their first nine shots in the quarter. Cheyenne Trotter converted a 3-point play at the 5:31 mark to trim the deficit to four, but DSU answered just 20 seconds later with a 3-pointer that pushed the margin back to seven. Trevecca was unable to close the gap meaningfully again in the game, and Delta State completed the season sweep of the Trojans with a  76-67 win.

THE TEAM
The Trojans made 21 of 57 (36.8%) shots in the game, they struggled from beyond the arc where they were just 3-for-15 (20%). Trevecca posted an 18-for-25 (72%) effort from the line for the second game in a row, and the Trojans out-rebounded DSU 42-35. The big difference in the game came in the Trojans inability to protect the basketball in the third quarter. Trevecca turned it over seven times in the third stanza, while they forced only one turnover from DSU in that frame.

THE PLAYERS
Gillies led all scorers with 32 points in the game, but only one other Trojan joined her in double figures. Trotter posted her second straight double-double - her 13th of the season - as she had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Shaw, Burgess, and Trotter each had three assists, and Shaw and Gillies each recorded two blocked shots.

GSC RACE

The loss drops Trevecca into a tie for fourth with Lee University, one game behind Union University and a half game behind Delta State. The Trojans hold the tiebreaker with Lee based on a season sweep of the Flames, but Delta State holds the tiebreaker over Trevecca by the same token. The Trojans defeated Union in Nashville earlier this season, with the return trip to Jackson set up to kick off the final week of the regular season.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will head to the Fred Delay Gymnasium on Thursday night for a crucial GSC tilt with Union (19-9, 14-6 GSC) at 5:30 p.m. Trevecca will be looking to take the win in a place that has not been kind to the Trojans - their last win at Union was in March of 2006. Following that game, the Trojans will wrap up the regular season with a game at Christian Brothers University (3-23, 0-20 GSC) on Saturday, February 28 at Noon.
