Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans fall at Union; Dramatic Finish Set for Friday Night at CBU

JACKSON, Tenn. – The final week of the Gulf South Conference regular season promised drama for the Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team, and after Wednesday night's action, the drama - and with it the pressure - ratchets up for the Trojans.

Trevecca (16-10, 13-8 GSC) dropped their first of two games on the road this week on Wednesday night - an 84-55 loss at Union (20-9, 15-6 GSC) - that sets up what promises to be an intense final day of the GSC regular season. The Trojans are still alive to host a first round game in the GSC tournament, but it will come down to a tiebreaker if they are to do it.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trevecca scored first, but it was Union that built a lead early. After Tatum Shaw broke the seal with a 3-pointer just less than a minute into play, Union responded with a 9-2 run that helped the Bulldogs open a 9-5 lead late in the opening frame. Trevecca went just 1-for-8 from the floor in the final six and a half minutes of the opening frame, as Union closed the period on a 12-4 spurt that turned a 5-4 Trevecca lead into a 14-9 Union advantage after one quarter of play.

The teams split the first 14 points of the second frame evenly, but with Union up 21-16 the Bulldogs strung together eight straight tallies to open their lead to 13 at 29-16 with 5:13 left in the opening half. The gap stabilized for the next three minutes or so, but Union then scored the final eight points of the half as well, taking a 42-23 lead into the locker room.

In the third stanza, Trevecca tried to mount a rally, but Union was able to prevent it, as the Bulldogs pushed their lead to 25 with 4:24 to play. The margin reached 29 before Trevecca netted the final six points of the frame to cut the margin to 62-39 headed to the final 10 minutes. In the final frame, Trevecca was unable to mount a charge as each Trojans' score was answered with one from the Bulldogs, and Union cruised home with the 84-55 win.

THE TEAM

Trevecca posted a fairly average shooting night, as they made 40.4% (19-47) of their field goal attempts, and 35.7% (5-14) from long distance. The difference was they attempted 20 fewer shots in the game than did Union and Union made as many 3-pointers (14) as Trevecca attempted. The Trojans were a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line in the game. Trevecca struggled to protect the basketball, as the Trojans gave the ball away 19 times in the contest.

THE PLAYERS

Three Trojans scored in double-figures, but no one had more than 11 points. Jordan Gillies and Ava Jones each tallied 11 in the game, and Cheyenne Trotter chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Brianna Burgess also had seven boards, and she led the team with five assists.

GSC RACE

With one game remaining in the season, the Trojans are currently fifth in the GSC standings, one game behind both Lee University and Delta State. Trevecca and Lee will swap their opponents from Wednesday night - with Trevecca playing Christian Brothers, and Lee taking on Union - while Delta State will battle Mississippi College. The Trojans could rise as high as the third seed in the GSC with a win and some help. The Trojans are positioned well in a hypothetical two-way tie with Lee, and in a three-way tie with Lee and Delta State, because of the Trojans' sweep of the Flames during the regular season. Final seedings will be announced by the GSC office following the conclusion of the season on Friday.

UP NEXT

Trevecca will conclude their 2025-26 regular season with an away game at Christian Brothers (3-24, 0-21 GSC) on Friday evening. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. in Memphis.
