Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans Finish Season with Win at CBU; Host Lee in GSC Quarterfinal Monday

MEMPHIS – As the season reached its final night, the path was narrow for the Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team to earn a home game in the Gulf South Conference postseason tournament which starts on Monday. Thanks to a win and a little help, the Trojans threaded the needle and will get at least one more game at the Trojan Fieldhouse this season.

Trevecca (17-10, 14-8 GSC) turned the momentum in their favor at Christian Brothers University (3-25, 0-22 GSC) with a second quarter where they out-scored the Buccaneers 20-8, and the Trojans came home with the 68-47 win. That, coupled with a Union University home victory over Lee University, pushed the Trojans into a tie for fourth in the GSC standings. The Trojans earned the higher seed thanks to a regular season sweep of the Flames.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Christian Brothers scored first, and they led for several minutes early in the game. Trevecca tied the game at 4-4 on a pair of free throws from Cheyenne Trotter with 7:08 to play in the opening quarter, and just less than a minute later, Ava Jones scored to give Trevecca their first lead. Jordan Gillies scored on the Trojans' next possession, and with 5:08 to go in the frame, Jones scored again to push Trevecca's lead to 10-4, but they were unable to shake the Bucs, and after the first quarter, Trevecca's lead was a scant one point, at 14-13.

Early in the second stanza, CBU surged. The Bucs opened the period on an 8-2 run that gave them a 21-16 lead, but those proved to be the only eight points CBU scored in the frame.  Trevecca closed the half on a 14-0 run, and they held Christian Brothers without a field goal in the final 4:27 of the frame, and during that span, Trevecca forced four turnovers. At the break, Trevecca held their largest lead of the game to that point, 30-21.

Trevecca scored the first seven points out of the locker room that pushed their lead all the way out to 37-21, and with 5:09 to go in the third frame, a 3-point bucket from Tatum Shaw pushed the lead to 20 for the first time, and as the game headed to the fourth and final quarter, Trevecca was firmly in control with a 48-33 lead.

Trevecca spent the final quarter managing the margin, as they kept CBU from making a dent, but it was not until late in the frame that Trevecca began to stretch their lead. Back-to-back triples from Shaw and Natalia Hernandez in the final two minutes pushed the Trevecca advantage to 24 at 68-44, and the Trojans cruised in with the 68-47 win.

THE TEAM

Trevecca made 29 of 64 (45.3%) of their shots in the game, though they cashed in only 29.2% (7-for-24) from long range. The Trojans attempted only six free throws in the game, and they made three. Trevecca dominated on the glass with a 47-30 advantage in rebounding, and the Trojans held the edge in points in the paint (40-36), second chance points (15-7), and fast break points (15-3).

THE PLAYERS

Only two Trojans - Trotter and Shaw - reached double figures in the game. Trotter posted her 14th double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and Shaw chipped in 11 tallies. Trotter was 10-for-13 from the floor as well. Gillies scored eight points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out eight assists, and Brianna Burgess added six helpers. Gillies also had three of the Trojans' six steals in the game.

GSC RACE

Trevecca had to wait after the conclusion of their game to see what transpired in Jackson, Tennessee between Lee and Union to find out their seeding. Trevecca got the help they needed from the Bulldogs, as Union doused the Flames 59-47 to drop Lee into the aforementioned standings tie with Trevecca. As a result, the Trojans secured the fourth seed in the GSC Championship.

UP NEXT

Trevecca will have home-court advantage in the opening round of the GSC Championship, with the quarterfinal round slated for Monday night at 7 p.m. The last time the Trojans and Flames met in the postseason it was also in the Trojan Fieldhouse - an 80-75 Trojans' victory in the quarterfinal round of the TranSouth Athletic Conference tournament on March 2, 2004.
