Trevecca Men's Basketball | Missed Opportunities Costly in OT Loss at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – In close games, especially on the road, little things make a big difference. On Saturday afternoon for the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team, the Trojans fell victim to missed opportunities at the foul line.

Trevecca (14-8, 9-7 GSC) led 82-72 with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, but four key free throw misses in the final six minutes allowed Valdosta State (14-8, 9-7 GSC) to force overtime, and in the extra session the Trojans were ice cold from the floor and VSU took the win 113-104.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Valdosta State opened an early 7-4 lead, but Trevecca answered with a five point surge to take the lead at 9-7 with 15:05 to play in the first half. An 11-3 run for the Trojans helped them open a seven point lead with just less than 11 minutes in the opening stanza, and the Trojans held off a couple of rallies from VSU to take the lead into the intermission, 45-44. 

An early 8-2 burst out of the halftime break pushed the Trojans' lead to 55-49, and the Trojans slowly stretched their lead out from there. A 10-2 Trojan run midway through the half gave Trevecca their largest lead of the game at 82-72 with 7:30 to play, and it seemed as though the Trojans would complete the season series sweep.

Trevecca led by six after a bucket from Fred Bailey at the 4:23 mark, but the Trojans did not get another made field goal until Jake Mulder cashed in a feed from Jax Abernathy with 1:51 to play. In that span, the lead evaporated, and while Trevecca did not trail, they were unable to restore a multi-possession advantage. Mulder scored again with 45 seconds to play, but VSU responded to tie the score with 33 seconds on the clock. Abernathy got a look from just outside the foul line to give the Trojans the win, but it went begging, and the game headed to overtime tied at 96-96. 

The extra session belonged to the Blazers. VSU scored the first five points of the period, and after Abernathy connected to cut the Trojans' deficit to 101-98, another quick four points from VSU pushed their lead to 105-98 with just more than a minute to go. Trevecca managed six points in the final 70 seconds, but VSU kept the game beyond the Trojans' reach, and the Blazers took the overtime win, 113-104. 
 
THE TEAM 

Trevecca made 36 of 81 (44.4%) shots in the game, but they were only 9-for-25 (36%) from long range. At the foul line, Trevecca struggled, making only 23 of 36 (63.9%) attempts. The Trojans dominated on the glass, out-rebounding VSU 57-41, and they held the lead for more than 30 minutes in the game. The biggest scoring difference in the game came off turnovers, where VSU held the edge 22-5.
 
THE PLAYERS

Abernathy posted his second straight 30-point effort, as he tallied 30 on 10-for-20 shooting in the game. Bailey (13 pts., 10 reb) and Jeremy Jackson, Jr. (10 pts., 10 reb.) each had double-doubles in the game, Brett Wright (17) and Justin Bass (13) each reached double figures on the score sheet, and Tyler Moore led the way with six assists.

UP NEXT

The Trevecca road trip continues on Wednesday, February 11 with a rescheduled game at Auburn University-Montgomery (5-16, 3-12 GSC). The game was originally scheduled for January 24, but was rescheduled due to the snow storm that enveloped much of the Southeast. The trip will then conclude with a game at Lee University (10-10, 7-9 GSC) on February 14.
