Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Complete Season Sweep of AUM Behind Hot Shooting Performance

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team continued their southern swing in the GSC on Wednesday night, making a trip to play a rescheduled contest at Auburn University-Montgomery. The game was originally slated for January 24, but it was moved due to the winter storm, but the delay did not keep the Trojans from completing the season sweep of the Warhawks.

Trevecca (15-8, 10-7 GSC) had three players eclipse the 20-point mark, as the Trojans won for the second time on their four-game road trip, defeating AUM (5-18, 3-14 GSC) 85-77. Trevecca now sits 1.5 games out of third place in the GSC with five games left in the league schedule.

HOW IT HAPPENED
AUM opened play with nine of the game's first 14 points, but Trevecca quickly bounced back on baskets from Brett Wright and Fred Bailey to take the lead at 10-9 with just less than four minutes elapsed in the contest. Those scores came as a part of a 9-2 Trevecca run, but as was the theme of the opening stanza, AUM answered with a run of their own - this one a 10-0 spurt - to reclaim the lea and push it to a seven point margin, 21-14. Trevecca held AUM to only one field goal over the next two and a half minutes as the Trojans clawed their way back to within a point as the half neared its midway point.

Moments later, Wright cashed in from deep twice as a part of an 8-2 stretch that pushed Trevecca back on top at 33-31, but over the next four minutes, only a Jax Abernathy layup went in or the Trojans and AUM took a 40-35 lead with 5:56 left on the clock. Just when it seemed the game may get away from the Trojans, though, they put together an 11-4 run to close the half, and in that span, AUM was held to just 1-for-4 shooting with a pair of turnovers. At the break, it was Treveca with the lead, 46-44.

Early in the second frame, Trevecca took command. AUM tied the game with 17:12 to go in the opening half, but a 9-0 Trevecca run that featured seven points from Abernathy pushed the Trojans lead to 55-46, and from there, Trevecca slowly extended the lead. With 9:53 to play, Justin Bass scored at the rim to push the Trevecca advantage to 11 at 69-58. Moments later, Bailey buried one from long distance to make it 72-60, and Abernathy fired from beyond the arc with 4:49 to play to give Trevecca their largest lead of the game at 79-63. AUM summoned one last gasp with a 10-0 run that pulled the Warhawks within six at 79:73, but Wright, Abernathy, and Bailey each scored from the floor in the final three minutes, and the Trojans held off the charge to take the 85-77 win.

THE TEAM
Trevecca's offense was efficient in the game. The Trojans were 35-for-66 (53%) from the floor in the game, and 10 of 25 (40%) from 3-point range. At the foul line, Trevecca earned only seven attempts, but they made five (71.4%). The Warhawks out-rebounded the Trojans 33-30, but that did not stop Trevecca from outsourcing AUM in the paint (46-38) or on second chances (12-11). Trevecca picked up 10 steals as a team, and they also out-scored AUM 15-6 on the fast break.

THE PLAYERS
Abernathy, Bailey, and Wright all finished with more than 20 points, and they had the top-three point totals from either team in the game. Abernathy continued his red-hot stretch with a 25-point effort on 11-for-19 shooting, and he added four assists and three steals. Bailey and Wright each added 21 tallies, Bailey grabbed a team leading nine rebounds, and he also had four steals; while Wright was 5-for-6 from long range in the contest.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will wrap up their trip with a difficult road contest at Lee University (10-11, 7-10 GSC) on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Trojans won the first tilt of the season in Nashville on January 4, 78-63.
