Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans Take Big Road Win at UWF to Open Crucial Trip

PENSACOLA, Fla. – When last the Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team saw the University of West Florida, the Trojans were scuffling. Trevecca was in the midst of a stretch that saw the Trojans drop four of five games to end the 2025 calendar year, but since the year changed to 2026, the Trojans have been on fire. That hot streak continued on Thursday night with perhaps one of Trevecca's most important road wins since joining the Gulf South Conference.

Trevecca (14-7, 11-5 GSC) avenged their earlier defeat at the hands of the UWF Argonauts (13-9, 8-7 GSC) with a consistent effort that saw the Trojans win each quarter en route to the 76-62 win. With six games left in the GSC slate, the Trojans are locked in a tight race for the second seed in the GSC Championship, and Trevecca will have two more huge road tests down the stretch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Scoring came slowly for both teams in the opening minutes of the game. Each team made only one field goal in the first three minutes, but Tatum Shaw, Brianna Burgess, and Jordan Gillies all scored at the rim in the span of only 2:08 midway through the quarter as Trevecca opened a 9-7 lead with 4:59 to play. After UWF tied the score at 9-9, Natalia Hernandez and Gillies each connected from deep as the Trojans surged in front, and after the opening period, Trevecca held the lead 17-13.

In the second frame, it was UWF who began to get things rolling. The Argonauts began the second stanza with a 12-5 run that saw them take the lead at 25-22 with 4:40 remaining on the clock, but the Trojans were able to dig deep and find an answer. Beginning with a layup from Cheyenne Trotter at the 4:19 mark, Trevecca out-scored UWF 14-6 over the final moments of the opening half - Gillies had eight straight points in the final 100 seconds - and at the break, Trevecca held the advantage, 36-31.

The momentum surge continued for the Trojans early in the third stanza. Still leading by five, Hernandez buried a jumper with 7:14 to play that started a 9-1 Trevecca run which pushed the Trojans' lead to 49-36 in the middle stages of the second half. From the point that run began, the Trojans also locked down on the defensive end of the floor, holding West Florida without a made field goal for more than five minutes, and as the game headed to the final period, Trevecca led 54-45.

UWF was unable to make a meaningful dent in the final 10 minutes, as the Trojans continued to stymie the Argonauts from the floor. Trevecca held West Florida to just 5-for-20 shooting in the final frame, and the Trojans did not surrender a 3-point field goal in the second half, as Trevecca cruised in with the win, 76-62.

THE TEAM
Trevecca shot the ball well in the game, but their defensive performance was even better. The Trojans made 26 of 53 (49.1%) of their shots including 10 of 24 (41.7%) from deep, and they held West Florida to just 30% (21-70) shooting and only 2-for-19 (10.5%) from long distance. The Trojans did damage offensively both off turnovers (20-9) and on second chances (16-10) as well, despite being out-rebounded (42-38) and suffering more turnovers (21-15).

THE PLAYERS
Gillies was, again, the game's leading scorer, this time with 22 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Shaw (17) and Trotter (11) also reached double figures for the Trojans, and both Gillies (14) and Trotter (10) reached double-figures in rebounds as well. For Gillies, it was her fourth double-double of the season, and for Trotter, it was her 11th, and her second straight. Gillies also had four blocked shots, and Brianna Burgess dished out a game-high seven assists.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will play the second of three straight tough GSC road games on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans will head to Valdosta, Georgia to take on the Blazers of Valdosta State University (11-10, 8-7 GSC) at 1 p.m. CST. The Blazers are currently 2.5 games back of Trevecca in the GSC race.
