Trevecca Men's Basketball | Huge Second Half Lifts Trevecca to 89-82 win over MC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Thursday night's game was a tale of two halves for the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team. The Trojans struggled at times in the first half, but in the second half, the Trojans blistered the nets and rallied to take the win.

Trevecca (16-9, 11-8 GSC) trailed by as many as 13 in the first half, as Mississippi College (10-16, 7-13 GSC) applied pressure in the early going, but Trevecca stayed the course and led by as many as 12 in the second half on their way to the 89-82 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the Choctaws opened the scoring, Jax Abernathy and Brett Wright knocked down back-to-back threes to give Trevecca the earle 6-2 lead. Mississippi College, though, immediately surged ahead with a 10-2 run, and the Choctaws led for the rest of the half. MC put together a 10-0 run that pushed the margin to 22-10, and their lead reached as many as 13 points, but Trevecca closed the gap late. Trevecca closed the half on an 14-4 run that trimmed the deficit to 38-35 at intermission.

In the second half, the Trojans began unloading a 3-point barrage. Trevecca made five 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes of the half, as Trevecca raced out to a 10-point lead with 12:55 to go in the game. The long range shooting forced the Choctaws to adjust their defensive approach, but the Trojans were able to make the counter move and start attacking the basket with the high pick-and-roll. Trevecca led by as many as 12 in the half, but Mississippi College did not go away.

The Choctaws whittled away as the clock wound down. A 7-2 run from MC cut the margin to seven at 64-57 with 9:49 to play. After Trevecca pushed the lead back out to 11 at 70-59, another 7-2 spurt trimmed the gap to 72-66. MC put together another 8-3 stretch that pulled the Choctaws within three at 77-74, but the Trojans were able to rebuff the charge each time. Five quick points from Jax Abernathy pushed the Trojans' lead back to eight at 82-74, and Trevecca sealed the game at the line on their way to the 89-82 win.

THE TEAM

Trevecca shot the ball well in the game, but they shot the lights out in the second half. Trevecca was 20-for-29 (69%) from the floor after halftime, including 6-for-9 (66.7%) from long range in the final 20 minutes. For the game, the Trojans made 34 of 58 (58.6%) from the floor and 13 of 26 (50%) from beyond the arc. Oddly, Trevecca struggled at the foul line, where they were just 8-for-19 (42.1%) in the game. Each team had 30 rebounds in the game, and the Trojans held the advantage in four of the five scoring breakdown categories - 42-40 in the paint, 24-15 off turnovers, 20-17 on the fastbreak, and 26-7 off the bench.

THE PLAYERS

Abernathy posted his fifth straight effort of 20 or more points, as he led the Trojans with 24 points in the contest. Abernathy was 10-for-18 from the floor, 4-for-8 from deep, and he doled out five assists. Fred Bailey also reached the 20-point threshold, and he made it a double double with 10 rebounds as well. Bailey also had five assists, and he swiped the ball four times. Brett Wright was the third Trojan in double-figures with 12 points.

GSC RACE

With three games left in the regular season, the Trojans are currently tied for fifth in the GSC. The Trojans are tied with Valdosta State - both teams are 11-8 in the league, and they are two games back of Alabama-Huntsville for the fourth and final home game in GSC quarterfinal round. The Trojans would be positioned well in any tiebreaker that involves UAH, as Trevecca swept the Chargers in the regular season, and Trevecca and Valdosta State split their two meetings.

UP NEXT

Trevecca will host Delta State University (9-15, 6-13 GSC) for Senior Day at 4 p.m.
