Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Avenge Loss to DSU; Remain Alive to Host GSC Quarterfinal Entering Season's Final Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Earlier this season, when the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team took on Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, the Trojans let one slip away and took a stinging road loss to the Statesmen. On Saturday afternoon, Trevecca was determined to not allow that to happen again.

Trevecca (17-9, 12-8 GSC) roared out of the gate in the second half, turning an eight point halftime lead into a 27-point advantage in less than seven minutes, as the Trojans ran away to the win over the Statesmen (10-16, 7-14 GSC), 83-66.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trevecca scored the first four points of the game, but Delta State responded with a 12-5 spurt to take the lead with 14:31 to play in the opening half. The Trojans answered with nine of the next 15 points to tie the score at 18 with 9:34 left in the first period, and moments later a 7-0 Trevecca run put the Trojans up 28-23. The Statesmen scored the next six points to inch ahead 29-28, but Trevecca's Justin Bass led the Trojans on an 11-2 run to close the half, and at intermission, the Trojans led 39-31.

The Trojans kicked the tempo into high gear to start the second half. Trevecca opened the half on a 17-6 run that saw them open a 56-37 lead. The run spanned more than six minutes and during that span, Trevecca was 7-for-10 from the floor, while Delta State was just 3-for-11. Trevecca eventually pushed their lead all the way to 27 points, thanks to a 13-3 run that featured eight points from Da'Shon Fisher that put Trevecca up 69-42 with 8:49 to go in the game. Delta State rattled off 10 straight points to cut the margin to 17, but Trevecca was able to lock down on the defensive end over the next six minutes of play, as they held Delta State without a field goal from the 7:02 mark until there was only 1:07 to play. During the span, the Trojans managed the gap, and Trevecca cruised home with the win, 83-66.

THE TEAM
The Trojans dominated on the offensive end of the floor in the game, shooting 56.1% (37-66) for the game, but the difference was particularly pronounced from inside the 3-point arc. Trevecca shot the ball at a 68.1% clip (32-47) from 2-point range, and the Trojans held DSU to only 12 made shots from inside the arc. Trevecca was 5-for-19 (26.3%) from distance in the game, and the Trojans dominated on the glass where they held a 47-30 advantage. Trevecca outscored DSU 60-22 in the paint, 48-36 off the bench, and 37-4 on the fast break.

THE PLAYERS
Three Trojans scored in double figures in the game, led by 24 points from Fisher. Fisher was an incredible 12-for-14 from the floor, and he grabbed five boards and dished out a pair of helpers. Fred Bailey picked up a double-double in the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and he had five assists, while Bass tallied 17 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Tyler Moore led the Trojans with six assists in the game.

GSC RACE
Heading into the final week of play in the GSC schedule, the Trojans remain alive to host a home playoff game, but the path is very narrow. Trevecca must win their final two games at Union and Christian Brothers, and they must have Alabama-Huntsville lose their season finale against GSC regular season champion West Alabama.

UP NEXT
The final week of GSC play gets underway on Thursday, February 26, at Union University (10-16, 6-14 GSC) when the Trojans battle the Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Trevecca then wraps up their season on Saturday afternoon at Christian Brothers (5-19, 4-16 GSC) at 2 p.m.
