CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Trevecca Nazarene Women's Basketball team (7-6, 4-4 GSC) pushed Delta State (7-6, 5-3 GSC) to the brink on the road Thursday afternoon, but the Trojans' overtime rally came up short in a 79–72 setback against the Lady Statesmen.
THE SERIES
The loss keeps Delta State unbeaten in the all-time series, as the Lady Statesmen now hold a 3–0 advantage over the Trojans.
THE MATCH
Trevecca and Delta State traded punches throughout regulation, with neither side able to pull away for long stretches. The game was tied at 16 after the first quarter before Delta State took a slim 36–27 advantage into halftime.
The Trojans responded coming out of the break, outscoring the Lady Statesmen 24–20 in the third quarter to trim the deficit to five entering the final period.
Trevecca continued to chip away in the fourth, holding Delta State to 11 points while scoring 16 of their own to force overtime tied at 67. The Trojans struggled to find rhythm from the floor in the extra period, however, as Delta State outscored Trevecca 12–5 in overtime to seal the win.
THE TEAM
Despite shooting under 50 percent from the free-throw line for the game, Trevecca stayed within striking distance by forcing turnovers and generating second-chance opportunities, finishing with 12 second-chance points and nine points off turnovers. Delta State capitalized at the free-throw line in overtime, going 4-for-5 to create separation late.
THE PLAYERS
Brianna Burgess and
Jordan Gillies led Trevecca with 15 points apiece, with Burgess adding 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Cheyenne Trotter followed with 14 points while dishing out eight assists, and
Jayda Woods chipped in 11 points off the starting lineup.
Tatum Shaw rounded out the Trojans in double figures with 10 points.

Trevecca returns to action on Saturday with a road matchup at Mississippi College (5-9, 4-5 GSC). Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
