Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans Fall to GSC-Leading UAH to Snap Six Game Heater

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team entered Saturday afternoon's action at the Trojan Fieldhouse riding a six-game winning streak, but The Trojans knew their task would be a difficult one if they wanted to extend that streak. As the game unfolded, the Trojans put in a solid defensive effort, but they were unable to down the Gulf South Conference's top team.

Trevecca (13-7, 10-5 GSC) held the University of Alabama-Huntsville (19-4, 14-1 GSC) to 15 points or less in three of the four quarters of Saturday's contest, but the Chargers kept Trevecca from getting into a rhythm on the offensive end, and UAH took the win 65-51.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UAH opened the game on a 9-0 run, and Trevecca went 4:53 before they made their first field goal - a layup from Natalia Hernandez. Hernandez made another layup late in the quarter, and Tatum Shaw made the Trojans' first 3-pointer in the final minute, but after one quarter of play, UAH led 15-9.

Shaw and Jayda Woods scored in the opening moments of the second frame as Trevecca pulled to within a single bucket at 15-13, and Hernandez and Brianna Burgess each converted in the paint moments later to tie the score at 17. However, UAH closed the half with eight of the final 12 points, and at the break, the Chargers led 26-21.

In the third quarter, both teams began to find better opportunities on the offensive end of the floor. Trevecca converted eight of their 12 shots attempts in the frame - including all three attempts from long range, but UAH forced five TNU turnovers, and they made nine of 16 shots in the quarter, including four from long distance, and the Chargers took a 52-40 lead into the final period.

Shaw and Jordan Gillies each scored in the first 1:16 of the final frame, but UAH answered with an 11-0 run that all but put the game away. Trevecca was unable to pull closer than 14 the rest of the way, and UAH cruised in with the 65-51 win.

THE TEAM
Trevecca made 21 of 51 (41.2%) shots in the game, but they were only 4-for-15 (26.7%) from long distance. The Trojans were only awarded six free throws in the game, though they did make five (83.3%) of those foul shots. Each team grabbed 36 rebounds in the contest, and while the Trojans controlled the painted area (32-22), turnovers proved costly in the game, as UAH out-scored Trevecca 21-8 off giveaways.

THE PLAYERS
Shaw led the Trojans with 16 points, and she was 7-for-9 from the floor in the game. Hernandez was the only other Trojan in double-figures, as she tallied 11 points. Cheyenne Trotter grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds, and Gillies dished out five assists. Gillies and Trotter also had two blocked shots apiece.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will open a difficult four-game road trip on Thursday night. The Trojans will head to Pensacola, Florida where they will battle the University of West Florida Argonauts (13-8, 8-6 GSC) at 5:30 p.m., and the trip will also see the Trojans head to Valdosta State (10-10, 7-7 GSC), and Lee University (15-5, 11-4 GSC) in conference play. The Trojans also have a non-conference game with Lane College (12-4) sandwiched in the span as well.
