Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans Run Winning Streak to Six; Avenge Earlier Loss vs West Alabama

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  – The temperature outside the Trojan Fieldhouse was much lower than normal, but inside the Mark R. Moore Physical Education Center, the Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team continued to sizzle.

Trevecca (13-6, 10-4 GSC) ran their winning streak to six games, and they improved to 10-4 as they avenged an earlier loss to the University of West Alabama Tigers (9-8, 7-7 GSC) with a 78-75 win. The win keeps the Trojans in a tie for second in the GSC, three games behind the University of Alabama in Huntsville with eight games to play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UWA took the early lead, and they held the advantage for much of the first quarter of play. The teams traded buckets for the first three minutes, but a quick 6-point spurt from the Tigers helped them open a 14-8 lead near the midway point of the frame. The Tigers eventually pushed their lead to seven with 3:19 to play, but the Trojans rallied late in the period. With 3:06 to play in the stanza, Shina Howard Johnson connected from deep, and that ignited an 8-0 run that was capped by a traditional 3-point play from Cheyenne Trotter to give Trevecca their first lead of the night at 20-19 with 1:54 to go. The next trip down the floor, Trotter did the same thing, and after 10 minutes, Trevecca led 25-23.

Trevecca scored the first five points in the second stanza, but UWA rallied. The Tigers held Trevecca without a made field goal for more than three minutes, and in that time, they out-scored Trevecca 11-1 to reclaim the lead 34-31. Jayda Woods scored on back-to-back possessions to stem the tide and give the Trojans the lead back, with 4:25 to play in the half, and the Trojans finished the half with the lead at 42-40.

UWA tied the score at 44 early in the third quarter, but the Trojans kept them from taking the lead, and Trevecca followed with a small surge. Trevecca used an 8-1 run to open a 52-45 lead with 6:49 remaining in the third frame, and moments later, a 3-pointer from Jordan Gillies pushed that lead to nine at 57-48. UWA closed the gap to as few as six with 2:28 to go, but Trevecca cashed in the final three points of the period and with 10 minutes to play, the Trojans held the lead 62-53.

A layup from Brianna Burgess gave Trevecca their first double-digit lead of the night just 28 seconds into the final frame. Midway through the final frame, Trevecca endured a scoring drought of nearly five minutes, but on the defensive end, Trevecca was stingy as well, and the Trojans held the lead. Gillies snapped the cold spell with 3:43 to play, and that set off an 8-0 run for the Trojans that opened the margin to 74-64, and despite one final surge from UWA, Trevecca held on for the win, 78-75.

THE TEAM

Trevecca made 30 of 56 (53.6%) shots in the game, including a 5-for-12 (41.7%) mark from long distance. Trevecca was 13-for-20 (65%) from the foul line as well. The Trojans were out-rebounded 32-28, but the Trojans held the edge in scoring in the paint 50-44. The game was tied seven times, and there were five lead changes.

THE PLAYERS

Gillies led all scorers in the game with 24 points, and she was one of four Trojans in double-figures. She added a team leading eight assists along with six rebounds and three blocked shots. Tatum Shaw tallied 17 points in the game, Woods added a dozen, and Trotter narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and eight boards.

UP NEXT

The Trojans will put their winning streak on the line again on Saturday when they take on the GSC-leading Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (18-4, 13-1 GSC). The Chargers defeated Trevecca 80-61 in Huntsville in December. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
