Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Drop Double OT Barn-Burner with No. 12 West Alabama

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – When the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team last saw the University of West Alabama, the Trojans dug their way out of a deep hole only to see their comeback fall short. On Thursday night, 40 minutes was not enough, as the Trojans and Tigers played another barn-burner.

Trevecca (12-7, 7-6 GSC) had their opportunities to take the victory, but in the end, West Alabama (18-2, 13-1 GSC) showed why they are ranked so highly as the Tigers outlasted the Trojans in double overtime, 106-102.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UWA opened the game on a 7-0 run, but Trevecca battled back. The Trojans used a 9-3 spurt to close the gap to 16-14 with 12:20 to go in the opening half. After UWA tallied five straight points, the Trojans answered with a 10-2 run that gave them a 24-22 lead. The game remained close into the final moments of the stanza, but a late 6-0 run from the Tigers helped them take a 44-39 lead into the break.

Trevecca quickly cut the margin to a single possession, but the scoring pace was slow in the first few moments of the second half. The Tigers continued to lead, but Trevecca whittled away and a 3-pointer from Justin Bass pulled Trevecca to within one at 53-52 with 15:58 to play in regulation. Bass followed that up with four straight free throws that pushed Trevecca in front at 56-55. Moments later, a 7-0 run pushed the lead to 63-59 for Trevecca, but the Trojans were not able to pull clear. The game remained tight in the final moments of regulation, but with less than a minute remaining, it was UWA who held the lead 85-82. That's when Tyler Moore stepped up and buried a deep 3-pointer to tie the score, and that sent the game to overtime.

The Tigers scored first in the extra session, but the Trojans scored the next five points to take the lead 90-87 on a 3-pointer from Bass with 3:30 left in the extra session. The Tigers rallied though, and in the final two minutes, the lead changed hands three times before Jeremy Jackson, Jr. tied the game with 28 seconds left on the clock. UWA had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but three shot attempts went begging, and the game remained tied at 93 and headed to a second extra session.

In the second extra session, though, the Trojans had a couple of critical turnovers, and UWA took advantage. The Tigers pulled out to a lead of as many as seven, and while the Trojans battled back to close the gap to a single possession, Trevecca ran out of time, as UWA took the win 106-102.

THE TEAM

Trevecca shot the ball pretty well in the game, nearing the 50% mark both from the floor and from deep. The Trojans made 36 of 73 (49.3%) shots in the game including 12 of 24 (50%) from long range. The Trojans struggled against a much bigger team in the Tigers, as UWA out-rebounded the Trojans 51-36, though Trevecca did keep the scoring close in the paint where UWA only held a four point edge (46-42). The Trojans bench continued to shine as well, where they dominated the Tigers to the tune of 53-20. A huge factor, however, came from the charity stripe, where Trevecca saw the Tigers shoot a GSC season-high 42 attempts.

THE PLAYERS

Bass tied for the game-high with 22 points in the contest. And four other Trojans joined him in double-figures. Da'Shon Fisher tallied 19 points, Jax Abernathy scored 18, Jackson, Jr. chipped in 15, and Moore added a dozen. Jackson, Jr. led the way with seven rebounds, and Abernathy had nine assists and three blocked shots.

UP NEXT

Trevecca will return to action on Saturday as they battle the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers (14-6, 9-5 GSC) in a crucial GSC battle as the season heads toward the home stretch. The Trojans defeated UAH in Huntsville earlier this season, and the Chargers hold a two-game lead on the Trojans in the GSC standings.
